Ty falls asleep still thinking about it, about how Ben was when they first met. His hair a pale blonde, and always in a mess. HIs bright green eyes always sparkling in a way that made anyone looking at them fill with excitement - not to mention that flawless smile. He had once been so happy, so full of life, and then he slowly began to sink. Ty found himself missing what they used to be on more than one occasion, but the wishing was always followed by a terrible sense of guilt. The times their love would resurface are the times that make it all worth while for Ty. It reminds him that the Ben he fell in love with is still there, and how can he ever give up on that? He can’t, he won’t. For the most part, if Ty needs him, Ben is still there; at least until Ty does something to go and mess it all up, and then it is his own fault if things go downhill.
On Monday morning, Ty wakes before the sun is up, but once he is awake he is too aware of the pain he is in to go back to sleep. His shoulder feels like it is on fire and his head is throbbing. He rolls to the edge of his bed and feels around for his phone, it is down there somewhere. Once he has a hold of it he pushes down on the lock button and the screen illuminates his room, blinding him in the process. Squinting, he quickly turns the screen away from his eyes and waits until there are no small white dots swimming in his vision. Easing himself into it this time, he see’s that it is just after 5:00AM. He could try to sleep for another hour, or he could get up and wander about in pain for an hour. Ty drops his phone back to the floor and stares up at the ceiling. There is no way he is sleeping. Struggling out of bed and doing his best to ignore the pain he makes his way out of his room, pulling on a shirt that was lying on the floor as he does so.
Ty walks out the back door and sits on the edge of the wooden patio. It’s cold outside, beyond cold really, but he doesn’t mind because the chill is numbing the aches in his body; so he welcomes it. While he sits there he doesn’t think about Ben again, instead he thinks about what he is going to face today. Part of him considers staying home, maybe telling Martha he caught a bug over the weekend and staying in bed - but that won’t fool anyone except her. Brad knows full well now that something is ‘wrong’, and he has seen the damage. Jasper knows something, and Ty is sure that Brad is going to blab to both him and Stan the first chance he gets (that is if he hasn’t already). He really doesn’t want to sit through some stupid intervention where his friends ramble on about what is good for him; because really, what do they know? Nothing.
Everything has been falling apart as of late, and Ty hates it. He can feel everything changing, he is letting his reputation slip because he is so distracted. That is something Ty needs as well. To have control over what people think of him and how they see him is a sort of safety net for Ty; in his life not much is left in his own hands, and so he likes to know that he is moulding something himself. It isn’t just that though, his feelings are changing too. He has other reasons to look forward to going to school, new friends in his life, and new butterflies in his stomach. Ty continues around in circles when he thinks about it for one sole reason; he refuses to accept what he knows is true.
When the house really wakes up, Ty expects to receive another talking to from Brad, but Martha’s presence keeps the boy quiet, and Ty uses this all morning. When Brad’s done with the bathroom Ty excuses himself from his guardians presence for a few minutes. Looking at his reflection Ty resolves something - he is not ready to let go of his reputation, and he is not willing to push Jasper away anymore; even if he is not willing to give up on Ben either. When he leaves the bathroom, he finds that Martha has left for work and Brad is waiting for him in the kitchen.
“How are you going to explain that?” Brad asks, pointing to the bruising around Ty’s eye.
Ty chuckles to himself, it’s as if Brad has completely forgotten. “I’m not. I don’t explain things, remember? Everyone knows squat about me, and that’s the way we’re keeping it.”
