I was sitting in the front seat of my dad’s car, stopped at a gas station. We had been in the car for around 6 hours now and we were only half way there. My dad had gotten a promotion at his work and we had to move toCaliforniafor a few years. My mom was still living inUtahwith my little brother Mark at the age of 12 and my new baby sister Carry I was the oldest of three kids. I was sixteen and a half. There was a knock in the window. I looked up to see my dad standing there with a bill in his hand.

"Do you want to go buy yourself anything?" he asked as I rolled down the window.

"Yeah!" I said getting out and fixing my skirt "Do you want anything?"

"Uh," he said, trailing off for just a second, thinking. "Just some trail mix please darlin’."

"Kay" I yelled already half-way across the gas station parking lot looking towards the small 711. I loved gas station shops they have almost everything, but in a tiny store! Once inside,  I grabbed a large bag of trail-mix and a pack of 5Gum, the spearmint kind. I walked over to the drink section and grabbed an Arizona Iced Tea and two waters. I made my way over to the cashier counter and put everything onto the counter.

"Hey did you find everything ok?" he asked a little too nicely.

"Yep” I said just trying to be nice but he was still giving me a weird smirk, like he knew something I didn’t. I lifted one of my eyebrows and cocked my head just a smidge to the right. He looked a little defeated, knowing that I wasn’t going to flirt back with him. The total came out to be 7.95. It was a lot cheaper than back in Utah. I grabbed my bag and change and went back to the car.

"Hey dad," I said "can I drive?"

“I don’t know…last time I let you drive you almost killed us!” He said throwing his hands up in exasperation. He was a little shaken because last time I drove, I went a little faster then I should have, so he wasn’t trusting me with his car for a while.

“I’ll be careful Daddy! I promise!!” I said with a pouty look on my face.”

“Oh alright…I guess you can drive then." he said looking back to the rising price meter on the gas pump.

"Yay!" I squealed and gave my dad a hug. I jumped into the driver seat of the white '95 Z28 Camaro. When he finished filling the car and took his card back from the machine he got into the passenger seat of the car.

"Okay Lilly take it ea-"

"I know, I know dad, take it easy on the gas you don’t want me to get hurt... or too excited." I said. He smiled at me as I started the car. I loved this car it made me feel like I had so much power at my control.

“No no, not that…I don’t want to die!” He said sarcastically

I rolled my eyes and took off from the gas station pulling out highway. My dad got the trail-mix from the backseat and opened the bag.

"Sheesh Lil did you get a big enough bag?" he asked jokingly.

"For you? Never! That was the biggest bag they had and I knew you would want a lot." I said holding out my hand for some trail-mix. My dad laughed as he poured some into my open hand.

"Thanks" I said.

"No thank you for coming with me to California." he said

We stopped talking and after awhile my dad started to fall asleep. I looked sideways at him and took the trail-mix out of his hand before he spilled it onto the carpet. He would be mad if he did. I looked quickly back to the road knowing he would be even angrier if I crashed his car. When I looked up my stomach growled at me. I smiled thinking that I was so starving. I was always hungry….my mom said it was just a teen thing. I figured she knew what she was talking about…She was, after all A family therapist, and knew a lot about kids. Anyway she was probably right... She was always right.
