Chapter 8
Skylar's P.O.V
*flashback*
We lived on the island, me my mum, dad, brother and grandfather. Others came and went they were like us. The bond had been passed down through generations, I was twelve, my brother, Ronan, was 15 and he still hadn't found a bondmate. My parents were getting worried. Normally the dragons would come to us, they would be drawn to our soul. In my family not having a bondmate was a disappointment; my grandfather had disinherited his own son, my uncle. We thought the bond was becoming weaker; there hadn't been a new bond since my father. So my parents set out look for others like us, those that had come and visited us, to see if there was a solution. A couple of days later I found Sapphire, she was a few months old and had been abandoned by her mother. My grandfather was delighted and began to teach me all that he had learnt with his dragon, Emerald. In turn he cast off Ronan, paying more attention to me than him. Ronan became bitter and would only speak to us when needed. One day...he just disappeared. My parents didn't return and a month after Ronan's departure we received a boat on our shores with a baby dragon nailed to the post.... dead. Underneath the nail there was a note telling us that my parents were dead and that he didn't want to be like us. There was not signature but we guessed who it was from. In the months to come my Grandfather tried to teach Sapphire and I all he could, already he was loosing his mind. And then Emerald died of old age. My grandfather followed shortly after and I was left on an empty island. People didn't visit anymore. I was alone.
*Present day*
"No…. brother.” I hissed through my teeth, snapping my head up and staring straight into the eyes that had changed so much in 6 years. “NOW!” I roared to Sapphire and Felix. I pulled my sword from my waist, hacking down one of the human guards that, on Ronan command had come running. I kicked another in the stomach, bringing him to his knees before hitting his helmet with the hilt of my sword. I sliced at one guard’s legs, before driving my sword into another’s shoulder. I made my way through the mass of people to Sapphire and Felix who were fighting them left, right and center.
“What…. Now?” gasped Felix swipping at a soldier that tried to stab him.
“There’s to many.” Sapphire said.
“Flame them” I gasped out.
I heard the deep throating rumble that signaled the fire and ducked down covering my face. Sapphire and Felix’s fire mixed was almost unbearable. The heat was terrifying. Finally there was no one standing. I couldn’t see Ronan among the bodies. “Let’s get out of here.” I sprinted away changing as I ran, leaping into the air as a dragon and flying away.
Willow’s P.O.V
The next island we stopped at was all rock, no grass, trees or any sign of living things. The sun was setting and I knew we had little time to find shelter. After a bit of searching and examining possible caves I finally settled on a short cave. By short, I mean it wasn’t large and it didn’t stretch out. Basically there wasn’t any were for things to hide… you know like big eye hovering beings that scare the crap out of me. That kind of stuff.
I settled down with Bailee, placing myself around him in a protective circle. He fell asleep in matter of minutes. I snuffed out the fire; if anyone else was on this island, I didn’t want them to see the light and come snooping. I pondered briefly if I should go and have a check, just to make sure. After a few minutes of hesitation, I stood up and went to sit at the mouth of the cave. Closing my eyes, I let my mind float outwards. Nothing…. Nothing…. Nothing. I froze pulling back in slightly as my mind came into contact with several other beings. I tried to examine one of their minds, but walls were thrown up before I could get there. I snapped my eyes open drawing my mind back in instantly. If I strained my ears I could here soft growling and claws clicking against the rocks. Fear welled up in me. I didn’t know what to do. I could feel panic surfacing, a slight wimper emerged from my mouth as I backed into the cave.
“Willow?” Bailee mumbled stretching and coming to my side. He must have seen the wild look in my eyes, for his next question was something I didn’t know how to answer. “What’s wrong?”
“Not good.” I whispered pushing him behind me, as the sounds got closer. “Look Bai, were not alone on this island, there are others. And they know were here.”
