I don’t talk to him in the morning. When he gets out of bed to have breakfast, I don’t even look at him.
Nick stayed the night at someone else’s place, I don’t know where.
So it’s just Bryce and I this morning, and of course the bimbo from last night.
I chew my cereal purposely, contemplating what I can say to Bryce to let him know how much he is pissing me off. Maybe I should just tell him he’s an arsehole and get it over with.
“Baby, where are you going?” A sugary voice calls from his bedroom. He huffs in annoyance and answers
“Kitchen” he almost snaps.
“Uh oh, trouble in paradise?” I ask him sarcastically, looking down at my breakfast.
“What’s got you all stroppy?” He replies
“It’s nothing really, just people renewing my lack of trust in everyone.” I spit back at him and storm into the bathroom to take a shower.
I realise, as I stand under the warm running water, that today I have to work. And that means facing Olly again.
So not only am I going to avoid Bryce all day, I also have to avoid Olly, and I can only hope he is working on a different bit of the farm than I am.
I arrive with the help of Nick, who comes back just in time to take me. I walk into a room to dump my gear on the ground and prepare for my work today. I’m supposed to be shown different parts of the farm, in case I ever have to work there. Mr Dune must not do much all day to be able to take me around.
“Mornin’ babe” a greasy voice calls from behind me.
Damn, so much for avoiding Olly.
“Morning Olly” I reply politely, hoping he doesn’t try and start a conversation.
“Guess what we’re doing today” He says to me
“Nothing together, I assume”
“Nope” He laughs, popping the P, “I’m taking you around the farm”
Clearly smug from this information, Olly walks around in front of me and says
“Well, you ready or what babe?” before turning on his heels and walking out the door.
I stand there like a stunned mullet for a good few seconds before giving in and walking out the door behind him.
“So, where are we going?” I ask as he leads me to a beat up old ute parked on an empty field. It has peeling white paint, and looks like it’s rusted in places.
“In the car” he tells me sarcastically.
“No shit Sherlock, I mean where are we going in the car?”
He smiles and winks at me before opening the driver’s door and stepping inside.
I sigh in frustration and climb into the passenger seat next to him. He puts the ute into gear and drives onto a dirt road in the corner that I hadn’t noticed previously.
“First of all, this is a ute, not a car.” He tells me “And we are checking everything out”
“First of all you called it a car first, and what does everything include?”
He chuckles and doesn’t answer my question, instead driving further away from the farm house and dairy.
After a few minutes he leans over to the radio and turns the music up. The 1975 plays through the speakers.
Olly starts tapping his hands on the steering wheel to the beat of the drums and sings out loud in the car.
“And this is how it starts, take your shoes off in the back of my van” he starts singing to me.
“Yeah my shirt looks so good” he sings as he brings a hand to my face to face him
“As it’s just hanging off your back”
I laugh at his gesture and release his hand from my face. Taking a deep breath I prepare myself to sing with him as the song moves forward.
“And she said ‘use your hands and my spare time, we’ve got one thing in common and it’s this tongue of mine’” We sing out at the tops of our lungs.
“She’s got a boyfriend anyway!”
We sing through to the end of the song and fall into fits of laughter when it’s over.
“You’re a good singer, babe” Olly tells me
“Thanks, you’re not too bad yourself.” I reply smartly.
“So what’s happening between you and Bryce anyway? Is he like your boyfriend or something?”
“What? Why would you think that?”
“Well he was pretty protective of you at that party from what I remember… I could’ve sworn he was going to attack me”
“Well he was kind of right too” I say
“Yeah, sorry babe, I was a bit drunk”
I ponder his apology for a few seconds, wondering if I should accept it.
“We aren’t a thing” I tell him “Bryce and I, we’re just friends”
Just friends? Really Anna?
“So you’re saying I’ve got a chance then, hey?” Olly replies with a wink and a smug smile on his face.
I get home after 5 and decide to start making dinner before the boys get home. Olly offered to drop me off, and because I had no other way home and he was being nice to me I accepted.
He was actually a really cool guy. He didn’t act like an arsehole to me, or hit on me in any way.
Well, apart from a few comments.
After our little “Bryce” discussion, we quickly moved on to different topics like where we went/go to school and about our families.
I didn’t actually tell him about my parents, I just kept it very general so that I could have been living with anyone. Actually, I was mainly directing the conversation to be about him, not me.
But, whatever, he was really nice and that’s the point I’m trying to get across.
As I pulled out ingredients to make tacos from the fridge, the door opening and Bryce clumped into the room, covered in dirt. From head to toe.
“Woah, no, get out” I order him and he stares at me blankly.
“Seriously, get out and get naked before you come in here, I cleaned the place yesterday!” I exclaim and he realises what I’m talking about.
“Fine, I’ll walk around to the laundry” He says and walks back out the front door.
Before he walks back into the house I start to plan what I’m going to say to him.
Bryce, you’re an arsehole. You made me think you liked me, even if it was for one night and then you brought that skank, no Anna-calm down, girl back here. Really? Do you actually not care about me at all, cos I got the feeling you did a bit.
By the time I’d finished the rant in my head, I looked up to see Bryce standing in front of me, in his black hoodie from the other night.
