Chapter Nineteen - Lies

*Charlotte's Point Of View*

The doctor paused, looking up from her little file, her eyes wide.

"What?" she asked. I licked my upper lip in frustration, attempting to kick, wiggle my toes, twirl my ankle. But nothing happened. I couldn't feel anything.

"I can't move...I can't move my legs. Why can't I move my legs?" I stuttered, starting to feel a bit anxious. The doctor threw the file into the arms of one of the surprised nurses and lifted my foot. She clicked her pen once and then jabbed it into my heel. I didn't feel anything. It looked like it would have hurt...but there was nothing. She walked up beside me, rolling Louis away quickly. She pressed onto my thigh and looked at me sternly.

"Can you feel that?" she asked. I shook my head repeatedly. She kept patting my leg until she finally reached a spot around my waist. I flinched as she pressed onto the skin.

"Yeah...yeah, I can feel that." I said. The doctor ran her fingers through her hair and let out a deep sigh. She touched my shoulder and I felt my eyes fill up with tears. "What's going on?"

"Char, hon, I'm not exactly sure. I'm going to have to run a few x-rays and tests but--"

"But what?" I demanded. She looked down in shame,as though she couldn't bear to look me in the eyes anymore.

"The crash may have caused you to be paralyzed from the waist down. Your spine could have shifted, it could just be the nerves, who knows? I will figure this out, Charlotte..." she promised. Harry let out a shuddered breath and sat down, clutching his hair. I glanced back and forth between him and the doctor.

      "Wh-what?" I whispered.

"I could be wrong...and it could be something as simple as nerve damage and it might heal up soon. But if I'm right...you should prepare for the worst, honey..." she said solemnly. She eyed the nurses and they all walked out, closing the door gently behind themselves. I stared at my feet, utterly confused. I pushed with all my might to move them. Sweat beaded on my forehead and slid down my back as I concentrated hard. But alas, nothing happened.

      "I...I don't--"

"Char, love, I'm so sorry..." Louis murmured. I couldn't look at him. Harry grabbed my hand and kissed it gently. Then, it all hit me. I would never play soccer again. I could never surf again...or run...or feel the water lap at my toes. I would never take strolls with Harry at midnight again. I would never to jump on him when he came home from touring and wrap my legs around his waist. All because I couldn't move my legs

"I'm never going to walk again..." I whimpered.

      "Charlotte--"

"I'm never going to..." I erupted into tears. I slammed my head back on the pillow and sobbed uncontrollably, wailing and screaming. Harry quickly climbed into the bed beside me and pulled me close to his chest.

"Babe, it'll be alright. We'll get through this. I love you, Charlotte." he murmured into my ear as I cried. "You know that, love? I love you more than anything in this world."

"Why? You should leave me. You have a vegetable for a girlfriend." I wept.  Harry's arms tightened around me.

"I would never leave you, Charlotte. I'm here all the way," he whispered, kissing my forehead.

      "You don't have to be..."

"Shh, love, don't say such things..." he said, rocking me back and forth. He took a deep breath and started to sing.
