I sat on a barstool in the kitchen, eating lunch that I had cooked for myself. Subconsciously, I wondered where my mother had been for the past few days, but I didn't exactly want to know. Surely, she was just out with her usual crowd doing their usual activities.

My phone vibrated against the old granite countertop. Taylor was calling me out of the blue. This should be interesting.

"Hello?" I answered.

"Hi!" She chirped, sounding way too excited. "What are you doing right now?"

"Nothing," I replied apprehensively, "what's up?"

"I'm outside your house," she said. "I need you to come help me with something."

"What is it?" I asked.

"I'm supposed to be looking at necklaces that Sean could get me for our anniversary," she sighed. "But I have awful taste, and I know you have good jewelry sense. I need you to come shopping with me and show me what I want."

"Um, okay," I replied. "I'll be out in a minute."

I hung up, grabbed my bag and walked outside. When I got in the car, Taylor wasted no time driving off, honking loudly as she pulled away.

"Jeez, why so loud?" I asked.

She grinned, fanning her fingers out above the steering wheel. "I'm just excited!"

I laughed at her giddiness. Sean was a great guy, and was always nice to Taylor. I never witnessed her cry over him once and all of us were convinced that they would be married after school was over.

We got to the mall and Taylor hurriedly ran to the jeweler's. She leaned over the glass case, then looked at me and shrugged.

"What's the prettier necklace in there?" She asked.

I frowned at her. "My opinion is way different than yours."

"Not really," she objected. "May you recall the amount of each other's clothes we borrow all the time? Plus, you're my jewelry person. I always ask you for help with this stuff."

Everything she said was true. Taylor and I were no doubt best friends - I had a ton of her clothes and she had a ton of mine; she always asked to borrow jewelry when she needed it. And it was also rightfully implied that I was a jewelry fiend; I have a ton of accessories.

I sighed. "Well, do you want a romantic piece or do you want something more personal? There's hearts and stuff, or there's birthstones and zodiacs over here."

"Romantic, duh," she scoffed. "It's our anniversary."

"Right," I said. "Good point."

I looked over all the necklaces in the case, but the one that caught my eye was a simple silver heart necklace. It was only a hollow silver shape, but it had small jewels on it that made it glitter and look more filled than it was.

"This one." I pointed to it. "This is gorgeous. Do you like it?"

Taylor made a face. "Not really. I think I like this one instead."

She held up a golden solid heart with a heart shaped jewel in the middle of it. I thought it was godawful, but whatever floats her boat.

I rolled my eyes. "You didn't even need my help."

"I still appreciated it. Let's go get some ice cream, on me."

I agreed happily. We spent a good hour sitting in the small parlor, talking about the upcoming prom and all the things that came with it.
