"Send me a message as soon as you land okay?" Lana's Mom said as she gave Lana a tight hug. She's still teary eyed but it did not stop her from nagging.
"Your passport? How about your phone charger? Don't forget your medicine. Did you already tell to the organisation's HR that you will arrive today?"
"Yes, Ma." Lana gave her a reassuring look. Her Mom has always been like this. It was not the first time that she had to send Lana away. Lana has been living "by herself" since she was sixteen. She lived in the dorms as soon as she entered college, and after graduation, she stayed in the city to work. They are not poor but they are also not rich. And as someone who graduated from college, it is expected to at least provide for your own, and if you can, provide for your parents.
Six months after her college graduation, Lana's mother sent her to the US and lived with her brother. While in the United States, Lana started applying for law schools. Her father wanted her to become a lawyer and she has always been passionate about helping others so she thought that it was a good compromise. A year passed and she was accepted in several schools but eventually went for a law school that specialises in human rights. Lana excelled just like what her American classmates expected from an "Asian" kid. Albeit a bit racist, she didn't mind to be tagged as one. Unfortunately, Lana had to eventually quit because her student loan application wasn't approved and she can't let her parents pay for the hefty price tag of an American education. Lana went back to the Philippines, applied for a masters degree and worked some more.
Finally, four years after dropping out of law school, Lana earned my masters degree and was accepted to become a part of UNICEF in South Korea. Although she has a bias for everything Korean, she also has a thing for everything European. She likes learning about different cultures and actually does not mind being assigned to another country. She wanted to work for the United Nations - always have and always will. To be assigned in South Korea is just icing on the cake.
Four months after submitting her application, she was finally on her way to fulfil her dreams. Clutching her business class ticket with her left hand, Lana gave her Mom a hug and kissed her on the cheek. "See you after three months, okay?" She smiled. Lana's Mom has always been supportive of her and Lana knows that her mom knows that she is doing my best so her mom could be proud of her. Lana told her that they can arrange her mom's visit to Seoul once she is done adjusting with her new home and with her new job.
Lana entered the departures area and felt extra special as she went straight to the counter assigned for public officials and diplomats. She is fairly young to be labelled as a diplomat so she did not take any offence to the check-in attendant when she eyed Lana and double checked her official passport. Lana is not one, but as part of the UN, they treat her like she is one.
She finally boarded the plane and took a deep breath. This is it. She knows that if she save up diligently, she will be able to buy a house for her mom. Lana has never been more excited in her life. She took out her phone and put her HiFi headphone on. Music blasted and Lana finally calmed down. She closed my eyes and just enjoyed the moment.
Tap. Tap. Lana woke up from her nap. She slowly opened my eyes and adjusted with the surrounding.
"Hmmm?"
Tap. Tap. Someone's still tapping on her shoulder.
Lana looked up, and saw the whitest and most tired face she has ever seen.
Min Yoongi.
Of course she knows him. He's a member of the boy group BTS. She knows him because she is a fan. But then again, she can no longer turn her fan mode on. With him here, Lana knows that the other members are also on board. She quickly looked around and she was right. Lana composed herself, did not speak for at least five seconds and finally looked at him.
"Yes?" Lana asked.
He was a bit surprised. He said something in Korean but she did not understand what he said. Maybe he mistook her for one? Lana's father is of Chinese descent that's why she has always been mistaken as Eastern Asian.
"Sorry...do you speak English?" she knows he understood what she said but it seems like he is too tired to try. He looked at the flight attendant and gestured to her. The FA approached and talked to Yoongi. She politely smiled and asked Lana to move to the window seat since she was sitting on his seat.
"Oh. Mianhae." Lana tried communicating to him and gave him a faint smile. He smiled back but he looked tired and she was in no way going to interrupt him just because she is...was...a fan girl.
I have to act like a respectable member of the United Nations, Lana told herself. She put her headphone on, drowned their murmurs with music and finally drifted to sleep.
