Chapter 5
The camp was much different than I had expected. We drove down a long gravel driveway lined by woods. The smell of soil was strong in the air. Eventually we hit an open area which was filled with lawn. The first thing I noticed was the large lake that held a jetty that opened out into the water around five to ten metres long. Set in front of the lake, standing three stories high was the ‘cabin’.
It looked a lot more like an inn than a cabin. It was made of full polished dark wood. The veranda wrapped around the entire house and was as high as the first story. There was a rocking chair sat next to the large double doors that were already opened. When the bus pulled to a stop I climbed out of the bus slowly taking in everything around me.
Off to one side was a large shed type building that obviously housed water equipment. There were canoes set out the front of the building with paddles set aside. A man stood arranging things wearing a loose fitted polo shirt and a pair of board shorts.
Setting my gaze on the house once again, I noticed the same male teacher that had ushered everyone onto the bus. He stood ahead of the group of students that had just exited the bus and was clearing his throat trying to get everyone’s attention.
“Alright, the room arrangements are the same as they were last night; bedrooms are on the second story. Each room is the same so I am leaving you all free to choose your own rooms.”
With that said, students dashed into the house and upstairs. When the majority of people had left; Emily and Sarah included, I walked leisurely towards the house carrying my suitcase with me.
The house was beautiful. The front doors opened into a foyer type area that opened into a large lounge room on the left hand side through a large archway while the right hand side opened into a dining room through another archway. I made my way upstairs slowly taking in the beautiful chandelier than hung from the roof in the foyer.
The second story was pretty much a long hallway littered with doors. I saw Emily’s head pop out of one of the doorways; the first doorway to the left. She smiled at me before nodding her head motioning for me to follow her into the room.
The room was large and housed three four poster queen sized beds. My mouth fell agape in shock not expecting the room to be so large. There was a television hung up on the wall opposite the beds and a doorway on either side.
“Wow, are all of the bedrooms like this?” I asked curious.
“No,” Emily replied. “Just our room and my brothers are like this.” She shrugged noticing my confused expression before continuing. “This place belongs to my dad so we have our own rooms for when we come out for holidays,” she explained.
“Oh.” I replied dumbly.
“Check this out,” I heard Sarah say from one of the rooms beyond the two doorways. I followed her voice through the first doorway and noticed a large walk in robe with clothes strung up on clothing hangers.
“Why are there clothes here?” I wondered aloud.
“It’s just some stuff I left here,” Emily shrugged nonchalantly. “You should see the bathroom.”
