"That flight was so tiring.." I groaned as I plopped onto the bed at our Airbnb. I had just got off of a 16-hour flight from Vancouver to Tokyo. My parents, who lived in the Philippines, planned a trip for us to all go to Japan. However, my arrival was a few hours earlier than theirs so when I arrived, I was all alone.
I got to the hotel at around 2 AM, so after settling in for a bit, trying to figure out how to use the automated toilet, and watching a bit of Japanese television, I headed out to wander around Tokyo while the streets were a bit more empty. All the shops and restaurants were closed, so I just stepped into a Lawson convenience store to check out what weird stuff they might have and maybe get a chance to grab a bite as well.
I was standing near the counter, trying to read the menu that was all in Japanese. "Chi-kin-na-ge-tto." I read.
"Sumimasen." Someone said from behind me.
"Oh, sorry," I replied, moving aside to let him access the counter. I saw the guy glance at me before paying for his food. I just gave him a little smile and went back to trying to read the menu.
"Chicken nugget is very good." He said with a thick Japanese accent.
"Oh, arigatou," I replied.
I bought some chicken nuggets and sat by the window, a few chairs away from the guy who recommended what I was having. I bit into a nugget but didn't anticipate how hot it was. "Ah, 뜨겁다." I cursed in Korean.
"Oh, are you Korean?" The guy asked in fluent Korean.
I shook my head. "No, but I lived in Korea when I was little so I picked it up quite easily."
He just nodded his head and went back to eating his cup noodles.
"How about you?" I asked. "Are you Korean?"
"Nope, but I go there for work often so I had to learn the language."
"Work?" I grinned. "Aren't you a bit too young?"
"I'm twenty years old, I'm not that young."
"Touché." I smiled back. "I'm Christine, but my friends usually call me Tina."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Adachi."
"That's a cool name."
He smiled back shyly. "Can I sit closer to you?"
"Yeah, sure," I told him. "Go ahead."
We spent a couple of hours just talking about random stuff. I told him I was staying in Japan for a few of weeks and he gave me some recommendations for places to go to. He said that he would've loved to show me around but his schedule was packed for the next couple of days. It was almost 5 AM when we finished talking. He walked me to my Airbnb as the sun was starting to come up. "Is it alright if we exchange numbers?" I asked him as we stood at the doorstep. "You know, just in case I get lost or something."
"Sure," Adachi replied as he typed in his number on my phone. "Feel free to message me anytime, Tina."
When I got in, I had a good sleep for about six hours until I was woken up by someone attacking the doorbell. I checked the security camera and it was my parents and my younger sister, Abigail. As soon as I let them in, I was bombarded by my sister's fangirling. "Oh my God, Tina!!!" She exclaimed. "You will not believe who's having a concert in Tokyo this weekend."
"Who?" I asked, a bit unenthusiastically. I wasn't really into fangirl things as much as when I was my sister's age. I think I just grew out of it as soon as I started working.
"PENTAGON!!!!" She shouted and started jumping around.
"I don't know who that is but yay for you~" I chuckled. Even though I wasn't really interested in this group Abigail was talking about, I was still happy to see my sister in such a good mood.
