Chapter 12
I woke up at 8:00 the next morning, still tired, but unable to get back to sleep. I close my eyes and try to will sleep back to me, but it fails, so I decide to get up and go find breakfast. I quietly get down trying not to wake up either of the boys who are still sleeping peacefully. I take a quick look in the mirror and decide my hair might be better off in a ponytail so I quickly put up and leave the room.
I walk out in to the hall and can already smell the food. The good thing about being on the train all day is that all our meals are inclusive so we can eat as much as we want and don’t have to worry about paying for it. I follow the smell down the hallway and quickly find the breakfast buffet. I easily load the plate up with a little bit of everything, figuring when the boys smell the food they’ll wake up and want some too. I take my time walking back, not wanting to go back to being locked in the crammed room.
As I reach for the door handle, I can already here the boys are up and already at it for the day. I take a deep breath and open the door. I realize the room is put back together to its original form as they both turn to look at me.
“Remi!” Louis said a little too excitedly, “You’re okay!”
“Of course she is,” Arnold cantered, “She’s a big girl. She can take care of herself.”
“Well, you know, we are being chased by crazy people who are trying to kill us,” Louis said, “especially her.” It feels weird to have them argue about me when I’m standing right there.
“Yeah, and we’re also on a train,” Arnold said, “If people from the project were on the train, we would be dead by now.”
Louis just rolled his eyes at him and turned to me, “I’m glad you’re safe,” he said with a smile. I just smile back and take a seat to start eating.
“I need some air. I’m going to go for a walk and to get some food,” Arnold said, exiting the room quickly. Louis came and sat down next to me.
“Do you want breakfast? I brought back a lot and some extra forks.”
“No. You should eat while we have a free unlimited source.”
We sit in an awkward silence before I break it, “Well are you going to get some breakfast then or what?”
“Maybe in a bit. I’m not really hungry right now.”
“Because of your fight with Arnold?” I said, setting my fork on my plate, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to cause you guys to fight.”
Louis shrugs, “It’s okay. It’s not your fault. He can be difficult sometimes.” I nodded in agreement as I took another bite. He let me finish eating before he spoke again.
“How are you, Remi?”
I give him a strange look, “I’m pretty good.”
“I mean…how are you really? We’ve been on the road for a little over a week now. I know it must be hard.”
“Yeah,” I said, quietly, “I’m adjusting. It’s okay.”
“You know you can trust me right?” He said, turning to face me.
“Yeah, of course.”
