Prologue
"Summer, come on! We're going to be late!"
My twin sister Summer came flying down the stairs, her usually tanned skin flushed and her long flowing white skirt thrashing out behind her.
I laughed as she reached the bottom of the stairs and leant against the banister to catch her breath.
She glared at me but was distracted when
something beeped loudly from inside her mint green clutch.
"One second" She said to me, holding up a finger to signify me to wait.
I rolled my eyes and sighed and leant against the wall in frustration.
But then her facial expression changed to a look of surprise and fear.
"Hey Sum, are you okay?" I asked her, concerned.
She looked up at me, her face rearranged to a somewhat similar expression to the calm one that usually occupied her face.
"I'm fine, geez Laya, what are you? My mother?" She said snarkily, placing one hand on her hip.
This was her usual attitude, but I wasn't buying from the darkness look of fear, lurking deep in her bright blue eyes.
Shaking my head, I cleared all the negative thoughts from my head, throwing it back and laughing.
"And this is why you my darling, need glasses!"
Her mouth dropping open in shock, she shoved my shoulder lightly.
"Laya!"
"Oh yeah, You don't want to jeopardise your popularity, I forgot even though you talk about it 24/7!" I retorted sarcastically, copying her stance.
Summer rolled her eyes and me and grabbed her keys from the hall table. "Mom, we're leaving!"
No response. I snorted. "Yeah, like she really cares." I said sarcastically, mocking her. She ignored me and opened the front door, the atmosphere dimming rapidly.
"You coming?" I hated how her voice sounded. So defeated and deflated. I knew how much our parents divorce had affected her. We used to be so close to our Mom, but after the split she turned distant and cold.
Summer still tried to get through to her but, I never forgave her for neglecting us when we needed her most.
Summer flung herself into the passenger seat of her red mini and flung the keys into the drivers seat.
"You drive" She said, dull'ly. I ran around the car and put the key in the ignition.
The road to the party was silent. I kept on glancing at my sister, but she never moved from her position at the window, her eyes glued to the horizon.
When we reached the house where the party was being held, Summer exited the car, only pausing at the door to turn back to me.
"I'm getting a ride home, don't wait for me" She said, simply and slammed the door.
Little did I know that, that would be the last time I would see her.
