It was saturday night, around 3 a.m. As Lauren Cimorelli slowly crept up to the side door of her house, she slowly twisted the key into the door, being sure to make the least amount of noise possible. The room this door led into was the family kitchen. As she slowly tiptoed towards the stairs, she heard a noise that sounded like someone already coming down the stairscase. She turned to find somewhere to hide, but realized her kitchen didn't offer many decent hiding spots. She quickly pulled something out of the fridge to make it seem as though she'd just come downstairs for a snack.
From around the corner, Lauren recognized her sister Amy's yellow polka dot pajama pants walking towards the room. She tried to act normal, but it was hard for Lauren to lie, especially to famiy. Amy rubbed her eyes and let out a yawn as she entered the kitchen and immediately spotted Lauren.
"Lauren?!?! Gosh you scared me to death!" Amy gasped. She realized Lauren was acting a tad nervous as she started playing with the ends of her hair. "What... what are you doing up this late?"
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to scare you! I-I was just getting a little snack, I woke up and my stomach was growling. I had to find something t-to eat before I got back to sleep." She began to play with her hair again as she looked down, not making eye contact with her sister.
"So... do you normally get dressed, fix your hair and put on make up to come downstairs and get a snack in the middle of the night?" Amy asked suspiciously. She knew Lauren was lying, she just couldn't figure out why.
"I-I-I...." Oh no. Stuttering. Another thing Lauren did when she got nervous. She couldn't find the words she was so desperately trying to spit out. She was caught. "..... I just got home."
"You what?! Lauren, where on Earth were you until three in the morning? Mom and dad would kill you if they knew about this." At Amy's words, Lauren felt like she was going to burst into tears or throw up. As if her night hadn't been bad enough, now she would be grounded too.
"I... went to a party, okay?" She shrugged while trying to hold back tears, still looking down at the floor. "Its not a big deal. Please don't tell our parents Amy! I'm begging!" Now the tears started to stream down Lauren's face. Amy didn't know what was going on, but she had a bad feeling and she didn't want to make things worse.
"O-okay... I won't tell them. Are you okay though? Why are you crying Laur?" Her eyes were full of worry and concern for her baby sister. Lauren wiped back her tears and straightened up, grabbing her purse from the counter.
"Its nothing, okay? I swear. I'm really tired though, so I'll see you in the morning." She threw her purse over her shoulder and began to walk towards the stairs that lead to her room she shared with her older sister Lisa. She looked back at Amy before walking up the steps. "Thank you.." And with that, Lauren crept up to her bed to get some sleep, leaving Amy a confused and worried mess. Had something happened at this party? Was Lauren in trouble? Her mind was racing with theories, but she realized she was extremely tired as well, and soon walked up the same staircase to get some rest for the night.
