"I love you" I plead into the angry green eyes that I seem to always drown in.
"Of course you love me, and I you, but that isn't the problem isn't it? The problem is that you're a little whore," I flinch. "We have one sacred rule, Charlotte. One single law that all wolves obey, and that is to never betray your mate."
His anger and sadness empties out my heart and refills it with self loathing. A lone tear falls down my cheek and he continues.
"Don't you cry!" His voice chokes on tears that are starting to cascade down his face. "You don't deserve to! If anything its me that gets to cry!"
I try to cross the distance between us and hold him. Maybe if I just get to touch him, maybe it will be okay...
"No!" He pushes me away, "No don't touch me! You'll just make it worse! You make everything worse!" He screams!
"I know. Okay! And this hurts me too! I ruin everything! I'm broken! You're supposed to love your mate more than everything and I don't! What's wrong with me? I can't even love you how you deserve! I can't be whom I'm supposed to be! I can't look my mother in the eyes anymore because of the disappointment that's always there!" My voice softens, "And here you are crying over me. I don't deserve it."
"You don't deserve anything good in your life, but I need to know why. Why did you do it, Charlotte?" The anger, hurt, and bitterness are all evident on his tanned face.
The same emotions are mirrored on mine, but with one addition: guilt. "I am never good enough, not for you, for my parents, or for the pack. No matter how hard I try, I can never be. With him, just being myself is enough. And I love him, real, strong, pure love that isn't forced just because my wolf likes his scent a lot. Yeah I love you, but that's a genetic default."
"Get the hell off of my territory, you are not welcome here, and if I ever even get a small wiff of your sent, I will rip you apart, limb from limb. The mate bond apparently means nothing to you, so I will do my best to feel the same. Goodbye forever, Charlotte Reneè."
I gave one last look to him standing there on the cold winter ground with snowflakes dotting his thick black hair and landing on the tips of his eyelashes.
"Goodbye Steven."
And then I ran, I ran away from everything that I'd ever known. And with each breath, more weight was lifted off my chest.
