"Tell me again how you got me to agree to this?" I walk down the stained New York pavement, speaking into my earpiece as I glance at the skyline past the roofs of various buildings.
"Maybe it was just my charm." Franks voice funnels into my ear, making me smirk as my eyes stop, squinting up at the male figures above.
I focus back on the ground in front of me, shaking my head and keeping my gaze low away from passerby's. "I'll be there in 5, how's she looking?"
"She hasn't gotten out of bed since we've been here. I think she's devastated, I don't think she had anything to do with her partners death." David speaks his mind, making me nod slightly in agreement.
"I don't think so either. Imagine how she feels losing another partner." I clench my teeth, feeling the sorrow for her while knowing I couldn't help.
The sudden blast throws me feet away from my position, throwing me back with the rubble and debris from the nearby collapsed structure. I hit the opposite building with a groan, landing on my stomach letting out another cry of pain while not being able to hear myself through a piercing pitched tone rattling my brain from the loud explosion. Dirt plasters over my face as the smoke disguises me fully in the blast.
"Alexa? Can you hear me? Come on Alexa, answer goddamn it."
The voice cuts in and out, demanding me to refocus and gain my bearings through the screams of surrounding people echoing around me, sounding close to muted as I barely peel my eyes open. I push myself up slowly, each hand on my sides elevating myself off my stomach slowly.
"What the fu-" The words leave my mouth and almost instantly, like a scene from a movie, the commotion around me tunes into its true sound. Loud screams of terror from pedestrians and the wailing sirens of incoming rescue finally snapping me to my senses.
My arms wobble as I try balancing myself on my knees taking in my surroundings in shock, looking up to the building engulfed in fire and smoke.
"Frank?" I cough out, pushing myself up to my feet, stumbling forward through the cluttered cement.
"Shit Alexa, are you okay?" Frank replies instantly, the sound of relief in his voice all to obvious as he said my name.
"Yeah, yeah, I gotta get out of here." My feet push on, ignoring my weak rattled body begging to collapse. I cough with almost every step making my way through the smoke enclosed area, other civilians running past me as I stumble forward putting all resources of will into not falling.
I step through the smoke clouds, the clear air finally hitting my face as the commotion of those around trying to help finally come to view. The cops and firefighters running back into where I was relieved to have gotten out of.
