"Skye, Skye, Skylar wake up" I sit up and start thrashing my knife through the air. When I come to my senses I see Daniel about two yards. If he shook me awake I might have cut him across the face, again. I can still see where I cut him on the cheek a few months ago. "Daniel, it is two in the morning. Keep quiet or you'll wake the others." I said, with frustration in my voice. "What is so important anyway?" I asked.
"There is someone here to see you." I could clearly hear there were suspicion and disbelief in his voice. I did tell everyone that everyone I knew before I started the camp that they all were killed by the Southern gang. "Quit joking around and get back to your post," I said. "But I'm not joking around, there really is someone here to see. He says that you knew him before the Hack and War. He says he name is Zack." he clearly doesn't believe this guy but I do. "Wait did you say, Zack?" I couldn't believe it. There is no way he found me, it is impossible. "Yeah, he is an old friend of mine. Open the gates and let him in but keep a close eye on this guy he may not someone who you want to mess with. Escort him to the Conference Room, I will be there shortly. Understand me," I said, still trying to grasp the fact that he is really at my front door.
"Yes," he leaves without another word. I pulled on my leather jacket and laced up my boots. It feels like someone sucker punched me in the gut. All my running did nothing, he still found me. How is that even possible? As I walk through the twisting hallways I start to think about all the amazing times my friends and I had when we were younger. When I to the Conference Room I hesitated to open the door. Who the heck does he think he is? He broke my heart, almost got me killed and he still has the nerve to show up at my front door. I may have owed him once but that diet has been repaid.
When I entered the room he turned around in his chair and just stare at me with a smirk on his face. "What do you want Zack," I say with great hostility in my voice. I'm trying to hide how shaken I was by his appearance. "I just wanted to see you, old friend." "We are not friends Zack, you ruined that years ago," I said. "I kept my promise, didn't I. You've been getting my letters, haven't you?" he said while tapping his fingers on the table, knowing it would annoyed me. "Okay, Zack what do you really want?" I said trying not to let him see he is pushing my buttons. "Oh, nothing." The guys got some nerve showing up here after all he put me through.
"Cut the shit already, we both know you're lying." How much does he really want to piss me off? He knows I have no problem killing him. In fact, I've already threatened him the last time he decided to show his face here. "Okay, okay fine the Western gang just took over Surprise last month. You know I wouldn't come to you if it wasn't urgent. The gang took everything, they also killed almost everyone but the ones that ran away. Before you ask yes, he is okay I made sure to get him out before too much happened. The hardest part was trying to get him to leave his brother, but when his brother was killed in an explosion at the high school he came with the rest of us." he looks like he was about to cry.
"Let me guess you want me to help you," I said, not believing anything he says. "Skylar, I'm not trying to just save my own skin but a lot of others that survived too. Savannah, Justin, Trevor, Lexi, and Holli and those are just the ones I can think off the top of my head." he sounded really serious. "Where are they?" I asked really worried. "They are right around the corner. I brought them with me. If you didn't say yes then we would have raided the nearby houses so we could have somewhere to sleep for the night." he said in a smart-alec voice. "You won't find anything in there we raided those out before we could grow our own food. So good luck with that plan," What an idiot he should have been smarter. I out smarted him once again. Sucker.
"They still think you're dead. Do you want me to keep it that way? Or do you want me to tell them everythi...." " No, what ever you don't tell them." I interrupted him and yelled at him. "Okay, okay I won't but you'll have to tell them yourself," he said knowing that would kill me inside, but he is right I'm done with the lies. "You're right that would be best." Dammit. I'm died. God save my soul. How do I even start that conversation? Hey, guys, by the way, I faked my own death to fool you guys, so please don't kill me.
"Well, I guess I'll see you in the morning," I said still really troubled about tomorrow morning. "I guess so," he said as he got up from the chair. He was silent until he was about to leave, he turned around and said something I wish he wouldn't have said "There isn't a day that doesn't go by that I don't think of you. I love you Skye and I always will. Never forget that for my sake okay. Good night." He left without another word. How is it supposed to be a good night now?
