I laid down on the damp haystack under the sagging roof of the shelter. I glanced at Connor before eventually closing my eyes, and slowly drifting into a deep, peaceful sleep.
I wake up to the sound of the old moldy door to the shelter, falling off its hinges. I sat up immediately, trying to calm my heavy hoarse breath down. I turned to face Connor and shook him awake before I even realized what brought the door down. He didn't wake up immediately, so I glanced toward the doorway again. I don't know what I was expecting, but I knew it was going to be bad. When I realized there wasn't anyone or thing in the doorway, I calmed down. It was just the wind.
The wind? How can the wind knock a wooden door off it's hinges?! But then it hit me. I knew something was off. The whole shack was shaking violently, and a few old roof tiles flew off, leaving patches of dim daylight poking through. It was a twister.
Connor sat up. He gazed lazily at me, asking what happened. "Connor get up! It's another twister!" I said urging him to the door. "It knocked the door down, and if we don't hurry the roofs going to fly off too!" He looked up at the roof and looked back at me with fear that longed in his stone gray eyes.
Twisters have been popping up almost daily now, since The War began. That was another thing that people couldn't flee from. You either die trying to save yourself, or die trying to run.
See, in the 3000's, you have nowhere to run. Everywhere you go is like a trap, waiting for prey. And I learned that the hard way. The really hard way. But when you really think about it, it almost seems like the world is trying to say something. I don't know what, but there is definitely a message trying to get through to us.
"Hurry or we'll get swallowed up too!" I yelled at him. He threw his leather boots on and yanked my arm as he dragged me to the door before I could regain my balance. We ran across a big meadow and into a steep ravine and stumbled down trying to get away from the twister. I tripped on a sharp rock and tumbled down the steep rocky earth, dragging Connor behind me.
We reached the bottom and laid there for a second before getting back up. The world was spinning violently around me from the dizziness. I tried to get up after ten seconds, but shortly came crashing down on top of Connor.
"S-sorry Conno-r." I mumbled before slowly sliding off his back. I then fell back asleep from the nauseous feeling.
I woke up again, but to the smell of smoke.
