-CHAPTER FOURTEEN: CONFRONTATION
"May the best man win?" Harry challenged.
This is bad. This is really bad. Shira kept repeating this to herself as she and Harry watched Louis climb down the big rocks at a fast pace.
"L-Louis…" Shira stammered. "What are you doing here?"
"I should be asking you the same thing myself." Louis said staring at Harry.
"We were talking…" Shira said defensively.
"That would be obvious." Harry commented. "I guess you heard everything?"
"From a mile away." Louis smirked and he and Harry continued their staring contest. "You just couldn't get your hands off of other people's property, huh?"
Harry smirked at this remark and grabbed Shira by the arm. "And who told you she was your property?"
He turned to Shira. "Shira, let's go."
"I… I want to stay a bit longer. Can't we?" the girl replied, shoving Harry's forceful grip away. "It's such a waste…"
"Or is it because you want to be with this guy?" Louis said, obviously pointing to Harry.
"Th-that's kind of… not the point." Shira struggled to find the right words.
Yes, she wanted to stay with Harry. For no reason, being with Harry was—refreshing. As if a lifetime's worth of problems would just go away. However, the feelings she has for Louis are still lingering around. And they were strong enough to make her want to leave. But still…
Shira felt very feverish. Her insides were fighting with each other.
Why did this have to be so hard?
"Let's go back, Shira." Harry said, taking Shira's arm and dragging her away.
"What are you doing?" Shira blurted out.
"Hey, stop it!" Louis said and he took Shira's free arm and pulled her to his direction. "Let go, will you?"
"You let go, idiot! Can't you see she wants to stay? That's the only reason why she's here!" Harry argued and pulled Shira hard.
"Ouch!" Shira exclaimed.
"No, we're going back to London. Come on, Shira." Louis said and reciprocated Harry's pull.
"Let go, will you?" Shira ordered.
"Let's go!" said Harry.
"No, let's go!"
"Ouch!"
With one final pull from both parties, Shira's arm felt as if they were going to come off and she shook both forces with as much strength as she could muster and she ended up losing her balance, tripping and landing on her bottom on the sand.
All three of them went silent.
"I'm going back to my room!" Shira said and stomped away.
She could hear two sets of footsteps come closely behind her.
She turned angrily. "Don't you dare follow me. Stay here and cool down, both of you!"
Shira swore she'd never been as angry with them ever since. It was absolutely rare for them to really fight and what made her guilty was they were fighting over her. A bit flattering, of course, because at least she now knows her beauty is something worth fighting over about but she wasn't a toy! Can't they just try to win her over without breaking each other's arms or legs or both?
"I don't think I'd be able to sleep tonight." She sighed and she continued to walk until she collapsed on her bed in the hotel.
The two boys stared as the brunette walked away angrily from the shore.
It was a very awkward moment for the two of them.
"I told you to let go…" Louis blamed the other.
"Me? You were the one who gave her one last pull before she finally burst!" Harry retorted.
"You're blaming me?" Louis said, raising a knuckle, ready to make it land square on Harry's face.
"Isn't it obvious?" the other snapped back, raising a knuckle himself.
Just when they were about to injure each other, they both came to a halt the moment their eyes met.
And the two broke in laughter which lasted for a short while. When they were able to regain composure, they stared at each other intently as if conversing with their eyes.
There was an eloquent pause that followed and the cheerful atmosphere turned serious.
"You're serious about what you said?" Louis said first, breaking the silence between them.
"Which part?" Harry replied, emphasizing on the wide range of possibilities.
"The part about Shira…"
"Damn serious." Harry replied bluntly.
"That's too bad, then."
"Why?"
"Because I have no intention of losing her to anyone. Especially not to you." Louis flashed a determined look.
"That's what I'd expect. But you'd better not let your guard down—at all." Harry said and he held out a hand.
"You don't need to remind me." Louis replied and shook hands with his rival.
"May the best man win?" Harry challenged.
"Agreed."
