(Zayn’s POV)

Sitting in the hospital was a complete drag. Even though Niall was there to keep me company when my family couldn’t, I was still bored out of my mind. I was allowed to walk around for a little bit, but not so much as to rip open my stitches. I was glad to hear that I was being let out of the hospital that night, though. I had been there for too long and I needed the fresh air.

“Do you have everything?” My mother asked, holding my bloodstained clothing in the bag that the hospital had put them in. I groaned and told her to just throw those clothes away, but she swore that she could get the stains out. I just let her think that.

I checked my pockets for my wallet and slipped Niall’s necklace under my shirt for safekeeping. I then looked over to the corner of the room where Niall was standing. He had an unsure look on his face. “Uh, mom, can I just have a moment?” I asked her.

She nodded and gave me a small smile. “I’ll be right outside.” She then left the room and I walked over to Niall, placing my hands on his shoulders.

“What’s wrong?” I questioned. Niall looked down at his feet, but then back up at me. “Hey.”

“Sorry, I just- erm. I just met your mom for the first time.” He said as though he was embarrassed. I chuckled lightly and lightly cupped his cheek and smiled. He blushed furiously and that only made me smile wider.

“She would have loved you.” I promised him, letting my hand fall. He nodded silently and I grabbed his hand, tugging him towards the door. “Now come on. My mom is waiting.” We left the room and just like my mother said, she was right outside the door. She smiled once she saw me and quickly glanced down at my clasped hand that, to her, looked like I was holding hands with thin air. I quickly dropped Niall’s hand.

“Sorry.” I whispered to Niall.

“It’s okay. I understand.” Niall nodded. I smiled and looked back to my mother who was giving me a sly smirk. I shrugged it off, but I was pretty sure she was catching on to why I was acting so strange, grasping onto thin air, and talking to the wind.

“So mom, any chance I could go out with some friend tonight?” I joked with her. She sighed and shook her head. Obviously I wouldn’t be going anywhere. I had a large line of stitches going up my side and a few on the back of my head. The doctor told me to rest for the week before coming back for my checkup.

I was going to give myself the week to recoup because I knew for sure that Mr. Tanner was on the run. I was able to give an “accurate” description of his car to the police. Niall was the one who gave me all the details. He watched the whole scene unfold form his spot in the bushes. He had told me about how he took over several bodies to get to me, the action leaving me impressed. Usually I would scold him for taking over someone’s mind without them knowing, but he made it to me in time to give me the necklace and that’s all that mattered.

“Zayn, honey. What do you want for dinner?” My mother asked once I was all settled in bed. She tapped on my door lightly and peeked her head in. “Your sisters wanted chili. Does that sound good?”
