Meow

I sit on the staircase and sigh.

This is going to be one long night, like, when was the last time I wasn't concentrating on everything else than my exams the next day?

Who am I kidding. This will be a long night only until amma prepares dinners. Jeez. So much drama.

I sit at the edge of the stairs, feeling the chill breeze, suppressing the fear of something jumping up from behind me in the darkness, looking out into the silent, deserted and empty street. It feels good. Empty. But good. Scary? Creepy? Empty. Good. I stay there, pleasing myself not to probe further. Good. Feeling good. That is what I want before an exam. Not more pressure.

I begin shaking my leg. Tapping my feet. I place my chin on my hand, still staring. And my eyes catch something.

In the neighboring house, I can see the dark sideyards. I can see the silhouette of trees. And also something moving amongst them.

A black body. I don't know... But I know it immediately with those green eyes.

It looks at me silently-I can imagine it looking at me like that. I can almost see it. The chill breeze gets me a little high, and this crazy mind works out on a vengeance plan, though smiling and excited.

'Meow', I whisper. Stillness. 'Meowww...' I whisper again. A flinch. Ha! But this happens always. The cats never respond beyond this. Never meow back. I try making every cat meow back at me. 'Meoooowwwwww', I try real husky, real scary, a part of me wondering if anyone inside my house heard it. They probably would know what I was doing. Then the black form disappeared. A smile creeps on my face. I chased it, according to me.

I hear a sound from inside my house. The phone rings. I am relieved of finding something to do at least for a moment, because I was already working on what to do next. Meow at the dark space? No no that would be ridiculous.

Lazily, I pick the phone and keep it on my ear. 'Hello?' I vaguely remember not seeing who called. 

After a very brief silence, I hear a reply. 'Meoooowwwwww'.
