"Do you love me Mama?" The sweet innocent voice of a five year old boy asked his mother. His mother snorted and looked down at him, blowing smoke on him from the cigarette she was smoking.
"What made you ask that question, Gabriel?" The little boy, Gabriel, now had a frown on his face. "Well, at Kindergarten today Mike's parents told him that they loved him." Gabriel's mother was now on her phone, clearly not paying attention to the oblivious boy.
"And I asked him why his parents did that. He said it was because they loved him. But you never say those things to me." Gabriel's mother grunted and continued to be on her phone. Gabriel huffed and his lips pouted, his cheeks becoming slightly red.
"Do you love me?" Gabriel's mother looked down at him once again and spoke. "Why would I love you?"
Gabriel was confused. It showed in the way his eyebrows furrowed together. "You could love me because I'm pretty! I saw one of the girl's mommy's say she was pretty."
Gabriel's mother chuckled and for the first time in a while, gave her full attention to him. "Listen to me Gabriel. I am your mother. If your mother doesn't love you than who else would. You are not pretty enough to ever succeed in life."
