Hamilton POV
I step out of the car as it stops in the driveway. I stare up at the bungalow in front of me. I pick up my bag and start following the lady inside.

I had just arrived in America, it is January and I was freezing wearing only a thin sweater on top of my t-shirt. I had arrived late in the afternoon. The high school I will be attending has already started its second semester which means I will have a late start, but I know for a fact that it shouldn't be an issue for me.

The lady holds the door open for me as I walk in. When I do walk in, I find myself in a living room with a doorway across from me, and a hallway to my right. Julie is my supposed "foster mother" until I decided to move out or turn 18.

"This is gonna be your home for a while Alexander." She says sweetly "let me show you to your room"

I follow her as she walks down the long hallway on the right. She stops in front the farthest door on the left and opens it. The room was bigger than I expected. There was a small window immediately opposite us and a desk sitting underneath. I take a step inside and look around more. There's a bed up against the wall on the right, and a dresser right next to the door. The room is bare accept for the navy blue blankets on the bed. I set my bag down on the bed and start unpacking. I realize my foster mother Julie was still standing in the doorway.

"Thank you so much for this. For letting me stay here and for providing me with such a big room!" I exclaim happily. She smiles. "It's no problem really, it's our pleasure to have you."

She leaves and I finish unpacking. It doesn't take very long for I do not have many personal belongings. I walk out of the room excited to explore my new surroundings. I walk down the hall and locate the bathroom, Julie and her husband's room and my "foster brother's" room.

I still don't like the sound of a "foster family" but I'm willing to give it a chance. I walk out into a small living room. It has a tv, two chairs and a couched pushed up against the wall. The room right next to that one is the kitchen. I walk in and see Julie cleaning dishes as her husband 'that I still don't know the name of' was cooking dinner. He turns away from his pot on the stovetop and sees me. He walks over with an extended hand.

"Ah, Alexander. It's a pleasure to meet you. My name is Roger by the way, you may call me what you want. Supper will be ready soon." He says the last part in a singsong type of voice.

I stay in the kitchen chatting to Roger and Julie as I await dinner to be ready. Then I heard the front door open. A tall skinny guy with black hair walks in. This must be the third member of this family. Roger had told me his name was Patrick. He stops and takes a look at me, then proceeds to ask his father when dinner will be ready. He then stalks off to his room when he finds out it won't be for another half hour or so.

After dinner I return to my bedroom and start writing in my journal. I write about all that I've seen so far, what has happened, what I look forward to seeing and how excited I am to start school on Monday. I place the journal back in its spot in my desk and get ready for bed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I wake up early in the morning and it takes me a second to get my bearings. I remember my arrival yesterday and realize I'm still at my temporary new home. I get out of bed and stretch about to change out of my sweats when there's a knock at the door. I slip on a shirt and answer it. It's Julie once again.
"Hi, I was rereading your information sheet and noticed that your birthday was last week. So sense we haven't gotten you anything and that you don't have very many belongings or clothing, I would like to take you out to the mall and we could buy you some."she smiles and adds sweetly "I have also just sent Roger out to get you a special gift for your arrival here in America."
I was in slight shock. It was too early for all this, I was feeling overwhelmed.
"None of this is really necessary, I'm perfectly content with what I've got." I say slightly panicked. Her smile weakens a bit, but she pushes through it.
"It's the least we can do for you. Besides, you'll want to be prepared for school."
I still feel very overwhelmed and undeserving of these gifts, but I shrug it off and thank her. I get dressed, eat breakfast and we leave. As we drive towards the mall I can't help looking out the window at all the scenery. America just seems so interesting and new to me. It'll be a great place to start a new life away from all those labels I was branded with back in Nevis and St.Croix.
We arrive at the mall and start walking around. It's huge! I am in utter awe of it all. We go from store to store and pick up necessary items for school such as a school bag and new clothing which Julie had insisted on.
Walking through this huge mall infested with people and other teenagers all around me has really proved a good bonding time for me and my foster mother and is causing me to feel less anxious about being a new immigrant to America. I'm still not very used to having Julie care for me, but I can tell she's trying her best to keep me happy.
The fact that I've already met someone who cares about me makes me feel glad. We continue through the mall talking and buy some more clothing. After we've had our fill of shopping for the day, we head back home. I take all my newly acquired gear to my room and start unpacking and hanging up the necessary items. Roger and Julie walk in as I am hanging up one of my new shirts.
"We've got your welcoming gift, we hope you like it and treat it with care." Roger says holding a small package wrapped in fancy paper.
I take the package and carefully unwrap it. Inside is a phone. A new phone to be exact, and a very expensive one at that. How is this possible? Surely this is some cruel trick. My life has been hell ever sense I can remember. I come to America and suddenly it's amazing?! This is wrong, this won't last. Something bad is bound to happen. I look at the two desperately trying to figure out if this is some evil prank. They both look me over eagerly. Clearly this is a genuine present.
"I-I can't accept this. This must have cost a fortune, and I only just arrived here. You barely know me, for all you know I could totally use this for wrong doing or treat it poorly." They look taken back at my comment and confused tone.
"You may be right, but we have confidence in you. You are an incredibly intellectual boy after all, I'm sure you know the value of a gift such as this one." Julie says still trying to keep up her friendly smile, but something in her tone has changed, she seems slightly agitated.
"I'm sorry, you're right I will be taking great care and proceed with caution when using this. Thank you both so very much. For everything and for this."
I give them a reassuring smile. I've never actually had my very own phone before. I'm sort of excited to see how this thing works. This weekend just keeps getting better. I can't wait for my first proper education to start tomorrow.
Hey! So I hope you enjoyed the first chapter! I know it dragged on for a bit, but it'll start getting interesting pretty soon! I just wanted a bit of an introduction sort of chapter! Hope you guys liked it! :)
