Chapter 1:
I look out the car window, we've been driving for hours. The greenery of the trees flashing before my eyes as my dad is driving too fast. I should be used to the speed by now but images of us wrecking light up in my head. The radio is on blast and my baby sister Abby is hysterically crying, I grab her soft little hand and caress it with my thumb, she stops crying. My dad slows the car down, I look out the window, there's a beat up house with two kids probably my age working in the dead yard. I rest my head against the window and close my eyes trying to sleep when suddenly the car comes to a complete stop. My dad turns around to look at me, his face red and sweaty from the blazing sun. His mouth opens as if he were going to speak but no words came out.
"Is everything okay?" I ask. With no response he looks down at Abby who is now asleep a tear rolls down his cheek as he quickly wiped it off.
"We're here." He says. I look out the window seeing a small beat up blue house, this house was not anything fancy but it was better than the others in the neighborhood. I get out of the car and he tells me to grab the bags from the back of the jeep, I open the trunk and grab the two black duffle bags along with Abby's diaper bag. I follow the gravel path to the door, as I open it, it let's out a loud screech. A strong drift of cigarette hits my nose like a slap in the face. There's a tv in the corner of the room which looks like it's from the 80's the couches as well look vintage. My dad peers from around the corner of the hallway, "follow me" he says I follow him through the narrow hallway. As I look to my left I see pictures of me hanging among the walls along with picture of my dad, mom and I. We enter a room only a cheap air mattress along with a few cobwebs sit in the empty room.
"What is this? Why are we here?" I ask my dad as he lets out a heavy sigh.
"Jess, you know I want the best for you and Abby and with all these medical bills from your mom I can no longer take care of you two," his eyes filled with tears and he started choking on his words, "I'm so sorry... I love you" he kisses me on the forehead and walks out the door, I stood there for a moment still in shock my stomach in knots and a lump in my throat. I run out the hallway but it's too late. I watched his jeep speed away. I hear Abby crying, I followed her cries into the kitchen where I see the back of and older woman, facing my sister I hear her softly hush Abby.
"Who the hell are you?!" I let out. She turns around with a smile on her face, "oh Jesse you don't remember me do you?" I shook my head and took a step back. "Who are you and why are we here?" I ask, she chuckles "I'm your dads mom, also known as your grandma." When these words came out of her mouth I got lost in my own thoughts, "my dad said you died?" again she laughed, "Of course he did, he didn't wan you two to be exposed to me, us, his family." I don't understand why would my dad hide this from me after 16 years I don't know a thing about my family and suddenly I'm left here stranded with someone I don't know, someone my dad didn't want me to know.
