Hamilton: An American Musical is a musical about the life of , with music, lyrics and book by , inspired by the 2004 biography by historian . Notably incorporating , , , , and color-conscious casting of actors as the Founding Fathers and other historical figures, the musical achieved both critical acclaim and box office success.
The musical made its debut at in February 2015, where its engagement was sold out. The show transferred to in August 2015 at the . On Broadway, it received enthusiastic critical reception and unprecedented advance box office sales. In 2016, Hamilton received a record-setting 16 nominations, winning 11, including , and was also the recipient of the 2016 and the 2016 . The prior off-Broadway production of Hamilton won the 2015 as well as seven other out of 14 total nominated categories.
The production of Hamilton began preview performances at the in September 2016 and officially opened the following month. The first U.S. national tour of the show began performances in March 2017.
