As I sit with my head in his lap, I trace small circles on his cold wrist with my thumb. Pressing my finger into a crevice there, I feel his pulse; his blood coursing through him. It still is. He's alive, my Alan.
The steady, even beeping of the hospital monitor soothes me as I count his breaths, watching his chest heave up and down. I remember every time he inhales because it could very well be his last.
Ten days earlier
"You ready for our date tonight?" Alan's strong arms snaked themselves around my small waist. He buried his face in the crook of my neck, planting a soft kiss there before moving his tender lips to my ear.
"Mmm..." I moaned, and I could feel him smiling right by my ear. His glistening smile, right by me. I felt it, I knew it was definitely there, but I couldn't see it. It was one of the last times it would ever appear.
"Yeah, baby. I've got a surprise planned for your birthday," He purred, and I couldn't help but grin. He sensed my grin for sure, because he left a chaste kiss on my jaw. I smiled more and leaned my head back into his shoulder, and he tightened his hold.
"I love you. So much," I exhaled, then quickly inhaled, trying to pick up some of his sweet fragrance for myself.
"I love you more, and don't even argue this time," he laughed. I giggled in return.
"I guess we must love each other equally," I said, and he denied it again.
"Noooooo," he teased, turning me around to face him. The tip of his nose brushed mine and I felt heat linger there. "I love you the most."
He walked me backwards and pushed me onto the bed, and I immediately pulled my limbs together because I knew what he wanted to do to me.
Suddenly, Alan pounced on me, his fingers roaming over my body, leaving tickles everywhere they could. I giggled and writhed and tried to push him off, but he stayed on me.
"Alan! S-stop!" I said. I continued giggling until he finally stopped.
He hovered over me, his beautiful face inches from mine. His cheeks and jaw were defined and his eyes were dark brown as I stared into them. He had fluffy brown hair and loved it when I ran my fingers through it.
He's mine, completely mine. I put my arms around his neck and pulled him onto me, our lips connecting in a burst of love, warmth, passion and feelings. We moved in sync for a bit until he pulled off.
"Aww, why?" I pouted, and he placed a finger over my soft lips and smiled. His gorgeous smile.
"You have to start getting ready right now because I know how long you take," he softly said, and I groaned.
"Why do you have to be right," I tried to roll off the bed, but his arm stopped me and kept me stationary. "Make up your mind!" I joked, and he kissed my forehead.
"I got you something first, and I'd like you to rock it," he whispered, his hot breath hitting my face.
"Oh?" I smiled, and he lifted me off the bed and carried me to the lounge. He put me down on the couch of soft leather, and I placed my hands in my lap in anticipation.
"Cover your eyes," he orders, and I do as he says. "Place a hand out flat." I obeyed again. Something cold was dropped into the palm of my hand, and I instinctively wrapped my fingers around it.
"Can I open?" I ask, and he answered by gently taking my wrist and pulling my hand from my eyes.
I stared at my closed palm, as if waiting for a cue of some sort from him. He placed his warm arm around my shoulders and kisses my cheek.
"Open your hand, Josephine..." He rubs my back. I slowly opened my hand.
Once it was open, I almost needed to strain my eyes at how shiny it is. A gold chain sits in my hand with a charm of sorts. I pinch the chain between my fingers and lift it to see the charm better.
It's so beautiful.
I closely examined it, squinting for a better look. It was a stunning gold locket, a pretty diamond in the center of the cover.
"Is...is there something in it?" I asked, opening it. On one side of the locket, there is a small note reading:
To: My Queen, Josephine.
-your king
Tears brimming in my eyes, I smiled.
"Alan. I love this. I love this so much! I love you. I love you so much it hurts!" I engulf him in a hug, and he wraps his arms around me. "Stay with me forever!" I pull away and he's beaming.
"I will, Jossy. I will. I promise." He grins. "I was thinking that tonight we could take a picture to go in the other side of the locket," he suggested, and I nodded. I hugged him again.
"Can you help me put this on once I'm dressed?"
"Of course, my queen."
I stood up and left for the bathroom, holding the locket in my hand. My king. My love. My other half. I love Alan so much. Everything is perfect.
