I awoke to the sound of loud footsteps making their way down the hall. I looked around groggily but the room was dark except for the sliver of light from the hallway shining under the door.

The footsteps got closer to my room and stopped suddenly. I sat up slowly, a chill running up my spine when I saw a shadow blocking the light. Someone was standing in front of the door. But they weren't trying to come in. Not yet.

I quickly laid myself down and pulled the thin, worn down covers over me. I listened carefully. There was silence for several minutes before my the lock clicked and the door swung open. I held my breath.

"Are you trying to hide from me, number 234?" a deep, bored-sounding voice sighed. "It's time for your testing. Get up."

~ ∆~

"NO!"

I shot up in my bed and looked around frantically. My vision was blurry with tears and my breath was heavy with fear. I quickly regarded my surroundings and realized it was just a dream. I was still surrounded by the same off-white walls with peeling paint of the motel. The carpet was matted and stained, probably another reason why the room smelled musty.

I sighed and ran my hands through my hair. I was still sweating and my heart was still pounding. That dream was still fresh in my mind.

"Dri why are you up..?" a voice next to me whined. It seemed like I had accidentally awoken my sister, Juliana. She was in the bed next to mine, rubbing her eyes groggily.

"Sorry, sis. I didn't mean to wake you." I sighed. I guess she heard the shakiness of my voice because she looked in my direction and squinted.

"What's up with you?"

"Nothing..." It was too dark to actually see her face clearly but I could tell she was frowning deeply. "It was just a bad dream."

"Adriana I swear to god-" Juliana didn't even get to finish her sentence. There was a loud thump on the wall. We both jumped up and stared at each other. It came from the room next to us. Noises continued until they reached the hallway. Then, they were right outside our door.

Our door suddenly burst open. A tall man charged in, eyes black as coal, and growling like an animal. I screamed and reached for the remote. Juliana reached for the lamp on the stand and we threw our makeshift weapons.

They collided with the man, making him stumble. Juliana grabbed my hand and the car keys. She basically dragged me around the man and out the door. I peered behind us and screamed when I saw the man right on our tail.

"Juli, start the car. I'm going to try and distract him!"

"Dri you know you can't work under pressure."

"He's going to catch up to us before you even put the key in the ignition..!"

Juliana huffed and ran on ahead while I slowed my pace. I quickly racked my brain for a location and used the first one that came to mind. The man skidded to a halt. His eyes became glazed over and unfocused. His breathing slowed and he seemed to have taken to my illusion.

I sighed. It worked. This was one of my powers. The ability to get into people's minds. Make them see what I wanted them to see and think it was real.

I smiled at my accomplishment. Usually I wouldn't be able to conjure anything good so quickly. My victory was short lived. I could sense the man's anger flaring up and the haze within his mind.

I turned around and ran towards the car. Juliana motioned impatiently for me to hop in and starting pulling out and driving off as soon as I got in and shut the door. She was driving at full speed but I could still hear the man roaring in frustration and anger.

"J-Juli..."

"What the hell was that? He came out of nowhere. It was like he was possessed or something." Juliana checked the rearview mirror for the fifth time.

"Something was wrong with him, Juli. I couldn't really read him. Our emotions are so complex but he was just anger...anger and something I can't describe."

"Well it's all behind us now. Literally. We just need to get a few miles out and find somewhere else to crash."

I wondered if Juli could have done a better job at holding the man at bay. She had the ability to track people and hide through her connection with the earth. She could affect any plant in the ground that she touched and an unnaturally high tolerance for heat and more specifically, fire.

While meditation helped me heal faster than normal, being in physical contact with dirt, sand, pavement, or any variety of ground types seemed to quicken her healing.

"Juliana...I think we should be cautious from now on..." I rubbed my arms and stared out of the window.

"Why? I doubt he's tracking us. We just need to get out of here and we'll be fine, trust me."

"I don't know how to explain it but I don't think he's the only one like that. He felt more intense than any one person I've ever read. It's like he's two people at once."

"..."

"It seems as though your comment about him being possessed might not have been too far off..."
