It’s the start of February and you’re lying fast asleep in your bed when you hear the annoying sound of your alarm clock screeching at full volume. You groan as you effortlessly slap the clock down and bury yourself under the duvet even more. Your mum enters your room.
‘You know, an alarm clock’s purpose is to get you up’
You frowned at the loudness of her voice and kept your head under your duvet, not having any intention of moving anytime soon. ‘I’m getting up, can you just keep your voice down please? It’s too early.’ You yawned, closing your eyes and finding a comfortable spot in your bed before starting to fall back to sleep. ‘Oh for heavens sake’ You heard your mum say before pulling the duvet off you, resulting in you shivering as the cold air hit your skin. You knew that was going to happen because it happened almost every morning, but you still weren’t expecting for it to be that cold. ‘Ugh, fine, I’m up, I’m up.’ You slowly climbed out of bed and walked across the room, searching through your wardrobe to find some clothes. ‘My god, it’s the walking dead’ Your mum giggles to herself before walking out of your room. After you had chosen your outfit for the day, you left your room and walked into the bathroom, looking at your reflection before exhaling and quickly getting into the shower.
Your mum is in the kitchen cooking breakfast when there’s a knock on the door. ‘Babe?’ She shouted to your dad ‘could you get that for me? I’m cooking!’ After getting no reply, she sighed, turning down the heat of the pans and headed towards the front door. As she opens it, a tall guy, around 5’9 with his hair slightly quiffed is leaning against the porch wall whilst looking down at his phone. ‘Oh hey Ben!’ Your mum smiled as he looked up from his phone. ‘Hellllo’ He smiled back as he put his phone away in his pocket. ‘Is she ready?’ He already knew what the answer would be, of course. You were never ready on time, so this time wouldn’t be much different. ‘Sadly, no. It’s a bit chaotic this morning.’ The sound of you shouting to your dad, asking where your bag is projects down the stairs, making Ben smile. ‘I can tell’ he let out a soft giggle. ‘Oh please, come in’ He walked in behind her, gently shutting the door and walking into the living room. The smell of food filled the room. ‘Ben, have you had breakfast?’ You heard your mum yell to Ben from the kitchen. ‘Yeah, thank you. I had a banana’ He smiled as he looked back at his phone while waiting patiently for you. He knew you could be a while yet, so he wanted to get comfortable. ‘Is that it?! Boy, get in here now.’ He giggles before standing up, walking into the kitchen and sitting at the breakfast bar. ‘Here you go,’ your mum said as she placed a bacon sandwich down in front of him on a plate. ‘Thank you’ he said as he picked up the sandwich, taking a bite out of it. ‘Mmm, I tell ya, bacon..is..perfection’
A few minutes later, you walked into the living room, drying your hair with a towel. ‘Sup dude?’ you said as you high fived Ben. You two had been best friends for as long as you could remember. In fact, you couldn’t imagine what life was like before you had became friends with him. ‘Enjoying the bacon?’ You smiled at him as you continued drying your hair. ‘Your mum always makes nice food’ he looked at you, sighing because he knew how long your hair would take to dry. ‘Kiss ass’ he giggled and you smile. ‘Have you not even dried your hair yet?! You’ve got college in like..’ She looked down at her watch, but was quickly interrupted by the sound of Ben’s voice. ‘7 & a half minutes.’ He sarcastically smiled at you and you stuck your tongue out at him. ‘Well, have you seen the hair dryer?!’ You said, frantically looking around for it. ‘Just let the wind dry it’ Ben said as he laughed slightly. ‘Yeah, like that’s going to happen.’ You carried on looking for the hair dryer, knowing that if you were going to be late, you could at least dry your hair. ‘Ben’s right, go on, off to college’ You rolled your eyes as he grabs your bag, still eating the rest of his sandwich with the other hand. ‘Come on, you heard her, don’t be a princess.’ He laughed as he walked behind you towards the door as you poked his side gently. ‘It’s too early, I will tackle you to the floor, don’t push your luck’ you said, grabbing your jacket before walking back over to where Ben was standing. He was smiling at you and you couldn’t help but smile back. ‘Ooh, I’m so scared.’ He laughed sarcastically before holding your bag in the air. ‘for you, princess.’ You smiled, before thanking him and taking your bag off him. You both smile as you left the house, Ben shouting a quick thank you to your mum for the sandwich.
You and Ben walk down the empty-ish road next to each other, the wind furiously blowing through your hair. You loved it when you could just be silent with him, but still be having so much fun. You didn’t understand how, yet you didn’t complain. After all, he was your best friend, why would you?
