Moonlight
Julie is having her 21st birthday today with Nichole, Ashley, and I. We have all decided to go to a mellow spot in the woods that I know of. All we plan to do is drink and have fun.
“Whitney where are you going tonight?” my mother shouts, from down the stairs.
“Nohere mom, just out with some friends,” I shouted back. My mother doesn’t like Nichole or Julie. She says they are bad influences, with their drinking, smoking, and guy troubles. Ashley on the other hand is perfect for me to hang out with according to my mother. She’s soft spoken, knows her drinking limit, and she doesn’t sleep around, unlike Nichole or Julie.
I never tell my mom where I’m going, so going out tonight won’t matter much. I look in the mirror my shining blonde hair gentle curled so its resting on my shoulders. My violet eyes are outlined with black eyeliner and mascara. I’m dressed in simple grey short shorts, black tank top with a white hang off shoulder shirt, topped with black and purple pumps that I bought yesterday.
With my outfit chosen for tonight I head out of the house, avoiding my mother and her perfect new husband. I grab a pack of beer that’s sitting on our kitchen table as I reach the back door. They won’t know it’s missing they hardly ever notice anything beyond the television.
I make my way down the steps of the back door, past the bushes that guard my house to the edge of the yard. Nichole, Ashley, and Julie are there waiting for me with open bottles of Budweiser. Nichole is almost done with her eighth bottle, Julie is just beginning her sixth, and Ashley has yet to take a sip. I see Nichole start to give Ashley crap about her not drinking, so I pick up my jogging pace.
“Hey, guys, ready to go?” I say.
“I sure am, I’m not sure about Julie and this puritan!” Nichole sputtered.
“I am too!” Julie said. “Ashley are you?”
“Umm, sure I guess.” Ashley says softly.
“Let’s go bitches!” I yelled not caring if my parents heard.
Ashley was the first one to move for the forest, I followed still carrying my six-pack. Nichole finished her drink, opened up another one, then taking Julie’s hand in hers followed after us singing. Nichole and Julie were laughing like hyenas over the song. Ashley was obviously disgusted so she picked up her pace. Nichole often acted like a slut that’s why we don’t bother hanging out with her at school, when she comes.
We stumble through human made paths and trudge over fallen logs. It looks to be about midnight in Alton Woods, Maine. We have been out here for about one hour, we left at eleven. Ashley seems to be lost so I take the lead for her since I’m better at getting to our hangout spot. It’s a place my parents took me to when I was little.
Normally this place is peaceful. You can hear animals and the clashing of the water falling off the waterfall. Today however its serene look is disturbed by Nichole and Julie who run past me and Ashley. Taking off their shoes and jumping into the lukewarm water, making a huge splash all around. I push away the last branch as I make my way to the waters edge, inhaling deeply. The fall is surrounded by an ire smoke of some kind, smells like wood. Water droplets cover our skin and clothes almost making layers. Reflected off the water the moonlight shines up with a smiling face, casting shadows on its surroundings. The moss that covers the ground is like a barrier of metal that is as soft as a bunny. The water on it glistens in the moonlight, as if it’s a disco ball. The moss cover waterfall illuminated by its rays.
