Liam is waiting for the elevator doors to close when he hears a strong voice say, "Hold the elevator."
As one does out of curtesy he holds the doors open. To his surprise it's Mr.Malik.
"Hello Mr. Payne," he says with his business voice.
"Mr. Malik."
"Leaving so early," he states. Not even an eyebrow is raised.
"Yes Sir. Going to pick up the kids from school; can't be late again," Liam explains.
"Won't your wife be able to do it." Mr. Malik says. Because Mr.Malik doesn't ask questions just statements.
"They don't have a mother sir."
"I am terribly sorry." he says with a hint of sympathy.
The elevator makes a 'bing' sound and they both head out. Each of them going their separate way. Mr.Malik making his way into a black car where a driver is ready with the door open.
No words of goodbye are exchanged. Liam lets out a sigh. Mr. Malik makes him nervous to the point where he starts questioning if he's even breathing correctly.
He shakes his thoughts of his boss, with the defined jaw and expensive suits, making his way over to the boy's school.
They're waiting by the front doors, holding on to the strings of each others backpacks. As if they were to ever let go they would lose each other.
"Hi boys, how was school?" he asks them grabbing their hands, walking in-between the both of them to the car.
"We learned how to count to 100!" Johnny says proudly.
"And we got stickers for reading the alphabet." Brandon says raising his hand to show where the teacher had placed the sticker.
"No way! That's so exciting, I'm proud of both of you," Liam says sitting them both in their car seats. "Guess where boys who do well go?"
"To the park!" they both yell excitedly.
"You're smart and have mind reading powers too? Wow I'm a lucky guy to have you two." The boys just giggle and begin to talk amongst themselves about their day.
They arrive at the park, the boys immediately running towards the swings. He takes a seat at a near by bench so he can have a clear view of the boys. He goes through his emails and his schedule for the upcoming days.
He notices two little shadows in front of him. The boys are standing there with the biggest eyes and the poutiest of lips. He knows they want something.
"Yes, boys?"
They look at each other; Brandon nudging Johnny with his elbow.
"Daddy."
"Johnny." He counters back.
They have a stare down until finally the boys yell out, "Daddy!" and giggle.
"What do my munchkins want?" he asks bringing them closer.
"Ice cream, please."
"I don't know," he scratches his chin in a thinking manner. The boys giggle again at his antics. "My boys have been good today, why not? What flavors do you want?"
"Chocolate!" they yell in unison.
After they walk the little trail in the park a few more times they head towards the ice cream truck at the entrance. "Ok Brandon here's yours; don't go off anywhere Johnny still needs his." Brandon just nods his head. Liam turns around and is handed the second cone when he feels a tug on his pant leg. "Hold on Johnny let me just wrap a napkin around the cone."
