I woke up and looked at Adam who was still sleep next to me. I kissed his nose and got up. My phone's notification light was blinking. I picked it up and checked my phone. Two missed calls from my mom and two from my brothers. First, I talked to my brother, Jerod, then Michael and they told me that they were coming to visit in a few days for Thanksgiving. At five months pregnant, they were more than excited to see me.
Afterwards, I dialed my mom and she picked up on the phone after a few rings.
"Hello?" "Hey mom" I greeted. "Aaliyah, baby, how are you doing?"
"I'm doing pretty good, the babies are healthy so I'm happy. What about you? Talking to anyone yet?" I winked. She laughed. "My lovey-dovey days are far gone now." "Don't say that" I replied, getting a glass of orange juice to calm my sudden nauseua. "You're all that I have to worry about now. I still have to cook for you this Thanksgiving." "You're coming up here too?!" I squealed. "Yes! You know I wouldn't miss spending Thanksgiving with you!" "Yay! I miss your cooking!" "Well, I'll come up there and we'll go shopping. I know they don't have Duke's mayonnaise up there. That potato salad ain't gonna taste the same." "Well hopefully everything else will." I could hear voices in the background. "I better get back to work. You take care of yourself okay?" "Yes mama" I replied. "I'll see you in a few days." We said our goodbyes and hung up. I was so happy to have a great mom, Adam unfortunately didn't like his mom so much now.
An idea popped into my head.
I quickly threw on one of Adam's sweatshirts, a pair of sweatpants pants I had taken over one night, and my bed room slippers, and walked down the hall to my apartment. Everything was off, and I could hear the horns of cars outside. I instantly sat down at the counter and dialed Choochi's number. Ring ring, ring ring.."Hello?" she finally answered with a yawn. "Choochi, where is Adam's mom staying?" "Down the street from my house, why?" "I need to talk to her, do you have her phone number." I heard shuffling. "Yeah, hold up." I waited patiently on my end of the line, fiddling with a pen I had grabbed to write the number. "718-374-5840."
I quickly jotted it down on a piece a paper. "Thanks!" When I was finished, I called the number. "Hola" they greeted. "Hola, can I speak to Aina Rodriguez?" "Who is this?" the person inquired, with a thick Spanish accent. "Her son's girlfriend, Aaliyah."
"Aina! Someone is on the phone for you, she said her name is Aaliyah." I could hear her hand the phone over. "Aaliayah, how are you?" Her words slurred slightly together, I could tell she had been drinking some. "Great" I responded. "Why are you calling this early? Is something wrong?" "No, I'm having Thanksgiving dinner, and I want you to come over to celebrate." "I know Adam didn't set you up to this." I frowned. "No, I just want you to be with your family. I know you're not so big on celebrating Thanksgiving, but it would be great if you just came and stayed a hours or two."
"I guess I could come by and see you all."
My face brightened. "That will be great" I exclaimed. I hung up and did a little happy dance until I felt a small pain in my back. "Okay, take it easy in there" I said to the two unborn babies. I went and ran some nice warm water for my bath, of course, a bath wouldn't be perfect with bubbles! I finished running the water, and I sat in just relaxing until my skin would prune.
"Aaliyah?" I could hear Adam call from the living room. "I'm in the bathroom!" A few seconds later, the door opened and Adam walked in. "I could've been using the bathroom." He leaned down and kissed my cheek. "It's not like I haven't seen it before" he replied, sitting on the closed toilet seat. "How does it feel being 22?" I asked. "The same if I was twenty one." I lathered my body down, then rinsed it off. Adam sat texting on his phone. I tried to see who it was but I couldn't do it without making it suspicious. "Pass me that towel" I finally asked. He handed the towel over to me and I stood up to dry off.
"Let me."
He started to dry my body off for me, looking as he did. He stopped at my stomach and planted a kiss right on the center. "I'm halfway there" I whispered, running my hands through his hair. "God, I still can't believe this. I'm going to be a dad" he breathed. I took the towel from his hands and wrapped it around me. "You're going to be the best dad ever." "You're going to be the best mom ever."
I loved us being like this. Drama-free and loving, nothing to worry about.
I went into the kitchen, enjoying the feeling of not having to go to school the next few days due to a short break.
Adam came in behind me and let out a groan while stretching his muscles. "Thanksgiving is in two days" I reminded. He shrugged, taking a seat at the counter. "Don't you want to do something for it?" I asked, playing dumb. "Aaliyah, I never celebrated Thanksgiving, because my parents never did, because their parents never did." "You never had a Thanksgiving meal?" He shook his head.
"Well, you're doing it this year. My mom is coming back up here to visit. And I kind of invited your mom too" I trailed off. He stood up quickly.
"Aaliyah, maldita sea! ¿En qué estabas pensando?(Damn It, Aaliyah! What were you thinking)?!" I crossed my arms. "English please?" "I want to know what you were thinking?!" "She's your mom, Adam." He ran a hand through his short hair. "I think I've noticed that! She obviously doesn't want to be with any of her actual family." "Well she says she's coming." "How can you just think this is okay?!" "Don't yell at me, I'm just being nice unlike you!" He got quiet. "Just try and act excited" I pleaded, "She made you who you are today." He shook his head, looking at his hands.
"The streets did that for her" he mumbled.

We arrived at the pregnancy classes and took a seat on a blue mat. The instructor sat down on her mat. "It's so nice to see everyone's smiling faces today. Today in class, we're going to learn the signs of labor about breastfeeding."
I rubbed my stomach lovingly.
"Let's all start on a breathing exercise, even the men can get in on this exercise." Adam's phone vibrated in his pocket. "Turn your phone off!" I snapped under my breath.
"Breathe in and breathe out" she instructed.
Adam went and pulled his phone out his pocket and began texting somebody. "Adam" I growled. He hesitantly put his phone away. "Just my job." I sat back between his legs, so I could lean back against him.
I was getting very suspicious now.
