Episode One: Monsters Aren't Supposed to Exist
"Honey, I'm going to need you to take Benji to school today," my mom requested before she began retching again. So far, what I've seen of her pregnancy is far from the bliss they show on TV and in movies.
"Okay, mom!" I yelled as I ran down the stairs, now in a rush since I had to drop Benji off at kindergarten before I could go to school.
"Hey, squirt," I said before I ruffled Benji's hair.
"Hey, no touching my hair! and I'm not a squirt anymore, I'm a big boy! I'm in kindergarten now, remember?" Benji pouted.
"I'm sorry! I forgot!" I replied while trying not to laugh as I watched Benji flex his arms. "Now hurry up and finish eating your cereal! We've got school to go to!" As he began to scarf down his cereal I switched the cartoons that were on to the local news. Every morning I have to check and see what the weather would be like for the day.
"Hey!" Benji squealed right before I stuck my tongue out at him.
"Update on the epidemic now raging not only across country, but across the entire-," the news woman began.
It's probably just some new flu, I thought to myself before I turned the tv off. "C'mon, Benji! Let's go! You don't want to be late to kindergarten, do you?" I asked as he ran to put his bowl in the sink.

"Sorry I'm late Lisa," I muttered as I walked in the class, leaving an apple on her desk. She looked over giving me a sympathetic smile, knowing how hard it's been for my family since the accident with my dad. She is, after all, my mom's bestfriend.
"That's okay Jess, just don't let it happen again, and remember, I'm Mrs. B here," she lectured with a playful scowl as she handed me the worksheet everyone was working on. She smiled at me before she wiped off and then took a bite of the apple I gave her.
I sat in the desk next to my bestfriend, Alicia, and started telling her about how my mom's morning sickness has gotten so much worse.
"Yeah, she hasn't been able to eat in the last couple days, it just comes right back up. We're starting to get really worried about the baby," I trailed off. And then she gave me the look. The look of pity, the same one I got for what felt like forever after my dad's incident three months ago.
"She's gotten so big though!" I stated with a fake smile, hoping to get Ali, otherwise known as Alicia, to stop giving me the look.
"When's the shower?!" she squealed. Good, I successfully changed the subject, I thought smugly. I heard the door open and saw Lisa set down the apple and let another student in.
"Well we still have-," my sentence was interrupted when I heard the blood curdling screams of my mom's best friend as blood erupted out of her neck like a geyser. Everyone sat in shock, disbelief from what just happened was written all over every student's face. Tyler Cortez, the one who walked in late, then continued to attack Lisa's neck with a frenzied look in his bloodshot eyes.
Another student, who I recognized as Brad Johnson, our football team's quarterback, ran over and tried to push Tyler off of Lisa, but Tyler just focused on and then attacked Brad. That's when everyone else went into a frenzy. There was screaming, crying, and several other students trying to restrain Tyler.
I ran over to Lisa, tears running down my face. She looked terrible, blood was running down her neck and creating a pool of it below her. What was her yellow blouse was now just a red sheet almost torn to pieces. She pulled me close to her, and I could barely here her whispers over the chaos in the room.
"Save them," she wheezed before coughing up blood, leaving it splattered across her face, "Brett and Mitch, please save them," she pleaded as the life drained from her eyes. Her sons, Brett and Michael, I will go pull them out of school, try to help them with the loss of their mom. My family would even take them in since Lisa was their only parent. But save them? Tyler, whatever psychotic drug rampage he's on, will not be able to leave the school after what he's done. There are probably police surrounding the school grounds this very second.
"Jess, we need to go," Ali demanded as she pulled on my sleeve, our backpacks in her other hand. Another whimper escaped my mouth as I stared at what was the body of my English teacher, and someone I had known my whole life. I quickly scanned the room, there were a few more bodies on the ground, and the only ones who were still here were Ali and I. Everyone else must have left after they had miraculously restrained Tyler with duct tape that I thought was prohibited on school grounds. I walked over to him, not being able to control my anger. I meant to slap him, but when my hand was close enough he snapped at me, meaning to bite my hand.
"You're a heartless bastard!" I screamed at him. He didn't even seem fazed, it was like my words held no meaning for him. He just kept trying to scoot closer and snap at me, like an animal. I walked to the door of the classroom, Ali, anxiously waiting to leave the school, at my side.
With one last glance I left the room, shutting the door so no retreating students would accidentally stumble upon this scene. BAM. A sudden slam against the door made me jump, almost falling over. My eyes peered through the window next to the door, and what I saw terrified me. Lisa had her body pressed against the door, trying to get out. Her eyes were bloodshot and her wounds still repulsive. I let out a terrified yelp, making her turn and try to attack me through the window.
That's when I reached my breaking point.
"But she was dead!" I cried out, dropping to my knees. "Monsters aren't supposed to exist," I whimpered, already exhausted from my breakdown.
"We need to go," Ali commented as she tried to comfort me. I reluctantly stood up as she suddenly took off running, with my arm and I in tow. After reaching the parking lot, my crying had ceased I unlocked my Jeep and opened the driver's side door. After I sat in the seat and relocked the doors, with Ali in the passenger seat, I gazed at her before asking,
"Where do we go from here?"
"We pick up the kids," she replied nonchalantly after she throwing our backpacks in the back.
As we began to drive out of the too full student parking lot, I couldn't help but be thankful that we made it out. We even almost made it past the school before another round of horrified screams started. The last thing I thought before I focused on driving to pick up Benji and Lisa's sons was that there wasn't even a single cop in sight.
(A/N: PLEASE READ.
Ohkay, I'll start off by saying that no, there won't be an author's note at the end and beginning of every chapter. I usually hate when author's do that, so I'll do it as little as possible. But anyways, this was my first chapter of my first book actually published on Wattpad! So please comment telling me what you thought! The only thing I ask is no rude comments, constructive criticism is accepted, but flat out, rude comments will not be tolerated. I'll try to update ASAP. Thanks again for trying out my book, it means a lot!c: )
