"Two roses please." The young man said, smiling when the young woman beside him squeezed his hand. They both smile happily, exchange kisses on the lips and cheek. Abel hummed as he nodded, turning to the flowers behind him.
Roses, carnations, daisies, sunflowers, petunias, lilies, and Abel's favorite, tulips. All homegrown by Abel and his sister, Emma, before being plucked to be sold at the family flower shop. The store was full of colors. Reds, whites, yellows, purples, pinks, and oranges. But Abel has never seen the rainbows that decorated his shop. They were all different shades of white, grey and black. Only those who have found their soulmate were able to experience these magnificent colors. Abel has yet met his destined lover, so his world was dreary. And he doubt he ever will. But the lack of color in his world did not stop him from doing his job.
He knew what each flowers distinct look by heart. So finding the flowers was the easy part, he found the vase full of roses easily. But telling what colors they were was nearly impossible for Abel. The shades mixed with each other, making it difficult for Abel to find two red roses. He hovered over the vases, straining to find the roses the couple wanted.
The man seemed to notice Abel's dilemma, giving a sad smile. "There's two right in the center sir." He said, helping the tall man out. Abel sighed as he gently took the two flowers from the vase and wrapped them. The man smiled, handing Abel a five dollar bill before taking the flowers. "Keep the change." He says before walking out of the store, hand in hand. Leaving Abel alone once again in the store.
The tall, strong male gave a sigh, rubbing the scar on his forehead with his forefinger gently. He hated being cursed like this, it made like so much harder than it needed to be. Whatever deity or whatever thought a out this was absolutely cruel, not caring what happened to people like Abel who would probably never meet his true love. He was already 27, and the older he got, the less optimistic he became.
“I need a smoke break…” He mumbled to himself with his thick, grumbly Hollander accent. He left the counter a bit eagerly, flipping the open sign to closed on the glass door. He then reached for his aged trench coat, happily slipping into it before wrapping his signature blue and white scarf around his neck. He glances at himself in the mirror, nodding at what he saw before leaving the shop, locking the front door before heading to his usual smoking hideout in the towns park.
But Abel quickly learned that this wasn't the best choose he could have made as all be saw was couples. Holding hands, kissing each other, laughing together, and all the other public displays of affection that made all the single people feel discomfort at the sight. Abel was no different. He was glad those couples tended to avoid him.
Abel noticed an elder couple walking near him. He noticed that the man seemed tired, his wife gently helping him stand. Abel quickly stood, offering them his seat. They both smiler, happily sitting on the bench. “Thank you, young man.” The woman says with a soft smile, helping her husband sit. He grunted, offering a kind smile before walking off. A trail of smoke following him.
Abel sighed as he walked, closing his eyes briefly. He felt a little more tired than normal. He took a slow drag off of his cigarette, giving one last glance to the park around him before flipping the remains of the cigarette onto the concrete sidewalk. And with that, he went back to the flower shop, deciding he would close it to take the rest of the day off.
It was around three in the afternoon when Abel arrived home, a heavy sigh of relief leaving his lips upon stepping into his apartment. The stress of the day quickly evaporated off his shoulders. Taking off his coat and scarf to place them on a peg, he kicks off his shoes before going to go check on Lop. A small smile came to his face, thinking about the small bunny that was his roommate in a way.
