Terry🌳
"Hey Clover, what's up?" I said as I went up to her and kissed her cheek.
"Uh, nothing, oh by the way, my mom said yes to the mall on Saturday," she said turning red.
"That's great! So did mine!" I said excitedly.
"Do you think Max is coming too?" she suddenly asked. I had been on defense about Max lately. I admit it. He's just been getting so close with her, it just, makes me so jealous. The fact that she thinks about him, is just unnerving.
I cleared my throat. "I dunno, maybe. Why does that matter?" I said in my accent without noticing.
"Oh, it's just, well- he's just been on my mind lately."
"I see, sorry if that came off as rude," I apologized.
"No problem, but you do seem defensive every time I bring up Max, why is that?"
A shiver went down my spine and then I said,"It's just, it's nothing. Nothing..."
"Okay then, hey shouldn't the bell be-"
Ring
"There it is."
I walked her to our Algebra 2 class where Kiki met up with us. Sebastian kissed her and then she sat down in her usual spot in front of Clover.
At least Max isn't in this class. I get Clover all to myself.
I didn't get to spend much time with her on Friday though. By the end of the day, I found her laughing with Max in the bus. I sat behind them and tried to join in, but it wasn't the same.
Finally, Saturday came, I was doubting if I should even go to the mall at all. Maybe I should play sick.
"Terry?" my mom knocked on my door.
"Yeah?"
"I need to talk with you about something important."
"Okay, mom, you're scaring me." I said worried.
"Honey, it's nothing to be scared about, we're just thinking of- maybe-moving."
"Houses? What's wrong with this one?"
"Moving houses, yeah... and states. To Colorado. "
"What?! And you're bringing this up now?!" I shouted.
"That's the thing, we want your approval. We want to know if you want to stay or go."
"Well, I obviously want to stay-" I trailed off as I thought about how there was really nothing keeping me here. Clover is probably dating Max by now. They've probably been making out at her house and her parents are totally cool with it. "But I mean, I don't really have anything keeping me here..."
"What about that girl you said you were interested in?"
"She's- I still like her, but- I don't know."
"Terry, you've never had girl trouble. You're so charming and handsome that I never had to give you advice. I've always been jealous of the mom's that get to give their son's advice. What's wrong?"
"This girl, she's great. She's not like any other."
"How could this girl be any different?"
"She's not attracted by charm. And no matter how attractive I look, she can't see that."
My mom looked at me and squinted her eyes at me confused. I had never mention Clover as being blind. Should I tell her? Would she approve? Maybe I shouldn't.
"Terry?" she asked getting my attention.
"She's blind."
"What? The girl is blind?"
"Yes her name is Clover. She's pretty, and smart and nice and she has the best personality I've ever seen. I just, don't know if she likes me."
"Why not?"
"There's another guy. I think she likes him. I've kissed her, but I don't know why I just feel like she doesn't like me."
"Honey, she might not be worth your time. If she doesn't like you, she is missing out, not you, maybe moving is exactly what you need to start over. Thought about it that way?"
I looked at her in a thanking manner as she got off my bed and walked out.
"Maybe I need to move on," I whispered to myself.
My mom called me to the living room.
"Terry, are you sure that you don't want us to drive you?"
"Yes, Sebastian is coming to pick me up. I'll be fine. I'll be home before 12. I won't be past then."
"Okay, and remember, take this as an opportunity to find out if you actually want to stay for this girl."
"I will, you guys be safe. Have fun with Clara."
They waved goodbye and locked the door. I watched through the window as they drove off.
Sebastian would pick me up. It would be our group from school plus Julia, Katy's cousin. I think she had taken a liking to Max ever since she met him. I noticed because the second he sat down Julia changed completely. She was actually very talkative. Then she got all quiet when Max came over and sat down.
Sebastian called me to join him in his brother's car that was outside. I sat in the back seat and he high fived me as a greeting. "Hey Henry," I said to his older brother.
"Good to see you Terry, haven't seen you in a while," he said to me.
"We better hurry, the girls beat us there," Sebastian said to us.
"Ugh, man I wanted to surprise them with lunch."
"Oh well. C'mon Henry, let's get going."
He started driving and we got to the mall in 10 minutes. Henry stopped at the entrance and let us off. We got off and walked towards the food court to meet up with Clover, Julia, and Katy. All we have to do is wait for Max to get here.
I decided to sneak up on Clover and touch her shoulder from behind her. Only, I didn't count on her tapping into her reflexes and elbowing me in my chest.
"Ow, hi to you too Clover," I laughed.
She turned around, putting her hand on my shoulder. "Terry? I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to, I didn't know who you were and my parents taught me how to do that, I'm just really sorry," she rambled while still being slightly amused. "Are you okay? I'm pretty weak, so you're fine right?"
"Calm down, I'm fine, you just caught me off guard."
"Well, that teaches you to not sneak up behind me I guess," she laughed.
"Yeah, well, I thought it would be fun. Oh hey, Max is here."
"He is? Great! That means we can start...what are we doing again?"
"I don't know yet, Kiki was supposed to plan this out. She said it was going to be a surprise."
Kiki or Katy, called us together to announce our first activity. I shot a glance at Max, I squinted my eyes and he rolled his eyes at me. I was a bit surprised because of that, but then turned to face Kiki.
"So, for our first activity- we're going to the arcade!"
