Chapter 40: Some Sleep, Some Embarrassment, Some Secrets
Lynsey’s POV:
“... and every Thursday would be Universal Bow Down to the Bark days. Where everyone has to stand in front of an individual tree and shower it with gifts, like birdhouses and flo- OH MY GOSH! And if a tree wanted a tattoo, you could like… well you know how people carve things into bark? Yeah! Like… yes! I’m so smart!” Ryan went on.
“Oh you’re something… that’s for sure.” I laughed. I was close to Ryan’s house and could see the light radiating from his room out of the balcony doors. I made my way over to his front door, my cheeks red from the whipping wind hitting my face. I walked up the steps to his door and rang the doorbell, Ryan stopped mid sentence.
“You okay?” I asked, trying to keep a straightness in my voice.
“Umm…” Ryan whispered, “I think someone just rang the doorbell.”
“This late?” I followed what I believed to be normal protocol.
“Yeah… maybe I was just…” I rang the bell again, “Okay, not hearing things.”
“You should answer it.” I said.
“It’s 12:22, who could be at my house at 12:22?”
“I don’t know, look I’ll stay on the line, just answer it.” I was getting really cold and just wanted to be in his warm arms.
“Okay. Okay.” I heard Ryan’s bedroom door open and his footsteps carefully pad on the stairs, “I’m at the door.” he whispered.
I saw the knob turn and a smile spread across my face, his face peered out and his eyes glistened as they met mine.
“Funny, so am I.” I laughed as Ryan pulled the door completely open and pulled me inside. I put my phone away and turned to Ryan, “So? Can you puh-lease go to sleep now?”
Ryan bit down on his bottom lip and smiled at me, showing his perfectly white teeth pressed on his kissable, pink, crescent shaped lips. I nodded slowly and backed up, slipping my hand from his, to the staircase, walking up the steps, still watching lost-for-words-Ryan. Halfway up, Ryan ran to the stairs and took each step by twos, he got to the same step as I and took my hand, turning me the right way and walking up the rest of the stairs with me at his side.
Once we got in his room, he closed the door and pulled me to him, turning so my back was against the door, “I can’t believe you came here, in the dark, for me.”
“Well… you were refusing to go to sleep and you kept rambling about talking trees, so you know.” I smiled and snaked my arms around his waist.
“You are so perfect.” Ryan whispered and traced circles on my neck.
I rolled my eyes, but was mostly focused on the burning path. Ryan bent down slightly and grazed his warm, parted lips over my numb, chapped, top lip. I gripped to his t-shirt and kissed him softly. I came down from my tippy toes and looked up at his oh-so-blue eyes. His eyes looked heated, heated but also tired at the same time. I ducked under his arm and tried to pull him, but he didn’t budge so I let his hand go and walked over to the chair in the corner of his room. I took off his jacket and placed it there before heading over to his dark blue covers. I looked over at Ryan and smiled before getting under the covers and moving to the wall. After a minute I felt Ryan’s body fit up against my back and his bare legs wrap to mine. I hummed softly and loosened my body under his hold.

“I’m just saying, it’s insanely weird.”
Alex laughed, “Yeah, that would be weird.”
