Chapter 1: Talent Night
It’s Saturday! Everyone loves Saturday because it’s a holiday. My heart was pounding that something bad is going to happen. As I woke up, I wondered what is going to happen today. Finally, I realized there would be a social event going on later…
Everyone loves ‘Talent Night’ because it’s a wonderful night for those who are popular, except for me. I knew every time I will be lonely in a social event. This is the reason why I don’t like any schools’ social event. Thinking about this social event, I went on to my closet. When it comes to fashion, I am completely blanked. In the rule s of the social event, there is one rule written: “Every participants, audiences, or performers must wear smart casual / semiformal apparel. Those who fail to do so will be sent home.” Personally, I dislike this rule. It’s because I have no idea on what is ‘smart casual,’ neither ‘semiformal.’ It sounds like an alien word to me. I’ve tried every pieces of clothes I have. Finally, there is one suits me. I don’t know whether it is smart casual apparel or not, but I just love it. I hope it is. This problem had solved, but that doesn’t mean my problems are solved.
I am so regret that why I’ve purchased the ticket. Knowing that I am unpopular, unwanted, and unwelcome. Then, I suddenly recalled why I’ve bought the ticket. It started when I was at the school’s staircase, heading toward my classroom. Suddenly, two students, Emily and Priscilla were asking me, “Do you want to attend our school organized ‘Talent Night’?” It was difficult to answer this question. It is because I haven’t make up my mind yet.
Without my knowing, my mouth had muttered,
“Yes, I’m going.”
“You’re name is in our list. Please remember to bring your money tomorrow. Thank you!”
they replied.
“ ‘Oly, am I making a huge mistake.” I wondered in my mind.
As the time going on, I felt like not attending the social event. It was around 4 pm, I told my younger sister,“Hey, do you want to go to Sushi King at Boulevard? I’ll pay the bills.”
“Who will refuse such a wonderful request? I’ll go!” she mentioned. We’ve changed our clothes and bolted to the shopping mall.
When we’ve arrived, I felt guilty for refusing and escaping the event. Although I know I am not welcomed, but I felt like being a coward. It’s almost 5pm, I’m still at the shopping mall with my little sister, Alana. When it was 5.15, I quickly pay the bills at the checkout. Then, Alana and I hastened to home as fast as we could. At home, I quickly changed my clothes and asked my aunt for an opinion. She commented, “This is not smart casual dress code. It is formal.” I went on to my closet and carry a handful of clothes. Aunt Henna simply grabbed one T-shirt with a collar and a long pant. She said “This could be the perfect match for you!” I put on the dress and returned to my aunt. “Wow, it was perfect,” she remarked.
It was just in time, my mom arrived at my home. I got into the car immediately, and we’d move off. “Where are you going?” she stared at me “Are you going to have a dinner later?” “Yes, certainly,” I answered “It ‘s in Penview Hotel. Don’t forget to fetch me up at 9pm.” “No problem,” she replied.
Soon, we’d arrived to the Penview Hotel. My mom dropped me behind the hotel and I move on to the entrance. One of the English Radio Clubs’ committee, Emily finds a sit for me. At there, I saw my classmates sitting with each other. “Are there any empty sits here?” Emily asked. No one said any; most of them say there isn’t. Although there is a sit, Angela said that it has been reserved for the others. I still remember, one of the rule mentioned: Reservation of sits is not allowed. Sits are reserve based on first comes first serve basis. Brianna, one of the popular kids in our class and the entire school whispered, “Why does he come? Who invites him?” I dislike her because she is a cheap and bitchy girl. She has a lot of boyfriends and showing how cool she is. For the others, maybe it is; but it wasn’t for me.
Everyone staring at me as if my presence is most unwelcome. Emily finds a sit next to the table they sat. Fortunately, Michael Vincent sat beside me, and trying to comfort me. I felt touched and happy. At least, he isn’t like the other kids. “Actually, you are not alone,” he said. “You are just shy.” “I am not shy, but I felt not like to talk to the others,” I replied. “I know the moment I opened my mouth, I’ll offended everybody. The most importantly, I feel like annoying the others.” “The truth is you are locking your true self inside you,” he answered. “Your true self can be very cool. You look cool, actually, but you try to lock yourself.” “Thank you, Michael!” I replied. “Thanks for comforting me.”
It was about 10.45pm. , the event was ended. Michael and I standing at the entrance.
“You’re not annoying, but your voice is tiny,”
he glanced at me.
“You’re actually mumbling if I don’t hear you clearly.”
“Is it?”
I replied.
“Oh, I’ll try talk louder next time or maybe now…ha-ha.”
I don’t really expect my parents arrive earlier, but they arrive earlier than I expected.
I waved my hand and got into the car.
