Mr. Telephone Man
Preface;"I'M SORRY, MIA," her mother said. The forty five year old woman with a short shock of red hair stood in behind the white painted door to her seventeen year old daughter's room. Her eyes were rimmed red with old tear tracks streaking her blotchy face. Her fingernail polish was blue, and chipped from her teeth gnawing nervously away at them. "There isn't much we can do, pet." Her voice was wavering with sadness, knowing the events today would cause drastic changes to her daughter's life. Mia, sitting perfectly still on her twin sized bed, stared at her cellphone in her hand, Noah's last text message staring right back at her. He had sent it an hour before as he was out getting their coffee for their study date.
"He loved you, Mia." The girl sitting alone, wondering why life had to go this bad, cringed at her mother's words. Her strawberry blonde waves cascaded down her back wildly, falling only slightly in her emerald resembling eyes. She hadn't cried, nor had she screamed in agony at his sudden peril. She merely sat there, staring blankly at the lilac colored wall ahead of her, counting all the stars she had pinned up with their photographs. All the memories flooded in front of her like a cinema screen, laughter and love filling the aid. Until the screech of tires caught her attention. Her father, a dorky dark haired man, came stumbling out of his car. He was on the police force, of course he knew.
The door soon shut after he entered the house, staring at his ex-wife. "Melinda," he greeted nicely. She merely rolled her vibrant blue eyes, pointing a witch like finger towards the hallway. He hurried down the picture covered, dimly lit hallway, all the way to the end. A gentle knock came, then a set of two, until he knockedfour more times. It was their secret knock. "Mia, sweetheart.. It's Robert, your crazy ole father," he spoke sweetly into the door. Her lips twitched upward for a moment, before she finally felt it. She felt the wall behind her eyes begin to break, her tears lapping at the skdes violently. Hurriedly, she jumped from her bed, turned the lock, swung the door open, and threw herself into her father's arms. "Oh, Peanut," he whispered, stroking her hair as gently as he could.
Mia broke down, her body falling limply in pain. Taking Noah from her was cruel, a cruel act that wrecked her life for a year. A full year, where she dialed his number just to listen to his voicemail of the two of them. A full year until his number was disconnected, shattering her very last strand of hope that he wasn't gone completely. A whole year until he picked up.
