"So what's it like, becoming a sensation overnight?" The interviewer asked as he leaned over his desk, a curious look on his face as the cameras trained their focus on me.
"To be completely honest, it's truly surreal. I never thought I would get this far." I responded with a small smile. Every word I spoke felt forced, a underlying worry that the cameras watching my every move would see through the well thought out facade they'd created.
The interviewer pulled out a magazine from under his desk a large photo of me on the front cover, a golden crown was firmly placed on my head as I stared down the camera. I looked powerful and in control, if only that was true.
'Coming for the crown' Was written in bold lettering to the side. The urge to frown invaded my thoughts before looking up at the interviewer - I'd never heard his name - and forcing out a giggle. Look sweet and innocent, the viewers will eat it up.
"It really is amazing, I'm getting noticed on the streets. I mean my face is on one of the most popular magazines in the country!" A bright smile lighting up my face as I motioned towards the live audience.
A flash of bleach blonde hair reminded me of what I supposed to say. Even if I didn't want to be here, I had to do what is expected to please the masses.
I leaned forward in my seat, perching myself on the edge. "The other day I was walking down the street - I had just gotten lunch with my family, and this little girl runs up to me. She says my name and just out of nowhere hugs me. She's only like four years old and she starts listing off some of my songs, saying how much she loves my music. She hugs me one last time and then skips off." I took a breath after reciting the story my manager had ingrained in my mind. The audience cooed at the mention of the little girl.
"What did you do after?" He asked with a grin.
I leaned back with a small blush on my cheeks, "Well I just stood there, shell shocked about what had happened. Nothing could have prepared me for getting noticed in public for the first time." If only that had actually happened.
"Well thank you for coming on the show and sharing your first experiences with us, (y/n)." He said as you took a sip from the mug of water they provided you with.
"It was my pleasure, thank you so much for having me." I responded with a slight nod of the head and a bright smile.
The cameras dimmed as the show cut to commercial. Immediately I stood up, stretching my limbs and sighing at the satisfying feeling. The interviewer brushed me off as my manager - Diane, flooded onto the stage.
"That went well, the audience loved your story." She grinned as she dragged me off the stage, "Now that's over you need to get on a flight to Los Angeles immediately. You've been asked to attend an award show that takes place tomorrow, I'll run you through the details later."
A frown settled on my face at the news. "Any update on my mom?" I asked with a hopeful tone. Diana opened and closed her mouth for a second, as she looked away from her phone and over to me.
"I'm sorry, (y/n). She's gonna be stuck in Milan till the end of week, it'll just be the two of us for now." The older woman looked down at me in pity, it just comes with the territory.
"I do have some good news, I think you'll like to hear it." She said with a soft smile as we continued towards the back exit. "After the next award show your sister is going to visit you in LA, she's been busy with filming lately but she found some time to come see you."
Security opened the large doors for us and escorted us to our car. The shouts of paparazzi could be heard in the distance as they called out to me.
"(y/n), (y/n) look at me! Don't be so mean, I just wanna get a look at the new queen!"
I scoffed before getting in the car, the tinted windows providing a safe space.
"Did you hear that?" Diane asked, "He called you a queen, embrace it. This can be good for you." She said with a smile as she adjusted her lipstick in the car mirror. "As long as the two of us work together and we manage to control your attitude we can do it."
"I'm trying my hardest, Diane." I said, rolling my eyes as the started moving on the streets of New York. Passing people by the dozens as we drove along.
"I know you are, you've just gotta keep doing that. Right now the media has all eyes on you, so as long as we keep everything in check we can make it out alive." She sighed and turned around in her seat to look at me, "Your parents and I are only doing what's best for you."
Diane turned back around in her seat and turned the radio on, the sound of your voice coming from the speakers.
"Please change it, I don't want to hear it right now." Diane turned the knob again, switching to a different station before the last chords of a guitar played.
"And that was Calpurnia, ladies and gentlemen." The radio announcer said before jumping to another overly happy pop song.
Diane looked back at me with a questioning gaze. "Calpurnia..that sounds familiar, don't you know those kids?"
I turned to look out the window as we waited in traffic, watching as men in suits passed by in a hurry. "Yeah, I did."
