Chapter 20 –
Clio’s POV
I stopped the car and turned to face Becky.
“Becky? Becky?” I said, shaking her shoulders. Nothing. Not one sign of response, she was out cold. “Becky! Rebecca Charlotte King, why? Just sit there unconscious, while Mia and I try to escape. Don’t you dare die on me Rebecca!”
“Becky?” I heard Lil and El whisper in unison, obviously in shock.
Mia was freaking out. “Okay so Becky’s unconscious, Clio is going spaz, Lil and El are in shock. We need to escape, to think rationally. Screw you adrenaline! I can’t think straight now!”
“I’ll just keep driving then?”
“No. No you won’t. We need plan. Becky needs to get to the hospital. But first thing’s first, we gotta get out of here.”
“And your plan is?...”
“Run ‘em over.” Mia said, an unusual tone of malice ringing through her words.
“What do you mean?... We aren’t going to. We can’t. Look I was aiming to drive without hurting anyone.”
“Becky needs to go to hospital because of them, they deserve to die. Besides it’s probably the only way to get out of here.”
“But…” My voice trailed off. As reluctant I was to run people over on purpose, we didn’t have any other ideas. “We have a smashed windscreen. Has anyone else noticed how dangerous it is to drive past people with guns with a smashed windscreen?”
“It’s the only choice we have.”
“Okay…” I said, turning the key in ignition. Accelerator down, Clutch up. In unison. I was focused, I could do this. That was until I heard the gunshots.
I panicked and that resulted in me stalling, wasting precious time. I tried again and this time I had the van going at a slow pace heading towards the road.
“Clio! For Pete’s sake! You’ll need to drive faster than that if we are going to run anyone over!” I floored the accelerator, a risky decision considering that I had limited driving experience.
I flinched at the sound of a human body crumpling beneath the car.
“I am practically murdering these people!” I yelled to Mia.
“Don’t think like that. They hurt Becky, they hurt her bad. They want to take you. Clio! Think straight! Look out for that tree!” I swerved to avoid the tree but in the process ran over three more guys. I once again flinched at the sound of them going underneath the van.
A few more run-over guys later, we were on the open road heading towards the hospital. Well we thought we were anyway. Mia wasn’t that reliable with directions but she was the only one who knew the way.
We were following the road until we came across a body. It was a man, lying in a pool of blood.
I stopped the van.
