~Chapter 10 Jake's POV
I took my seat on the bus, across from Sam, and I smiled at her, “Are you ready?”
She shot me a grin, “Born ready baby.”
The guys chuckled, and she went into her pre-game space case mode when she plugged in her headphones. She does it before every game. I launched into a debate with Nathan about which girl was a better bang at the party last week.
“I’m telling ya, man. Carly is a good bang,” Nathan insisted.
“Most of the cheerleaders are,” Wesley said.
“Carly is into ya, Jake. It’d be easy to get her to bed,” Nathan added.
But before we get too much farther, Blake took a seat next to Sam. She shot me a confused look, and I looked back at her with the same expression. What the hell is he doing? Sam always sits by herself.
“May I help you?” she asked, taking out a headphone and shooting him an annoyed look.
Blake ignored her expression, “Does someone usually sit here?”
No, she always had a seat to herself. No one dared dispute that. Not even me. “No, I usually sit by myself,” she answered.
“Well, everyone can use a change,” he muttered. Blake better watch himself, Sam could kick his ass in a heartbeat.
She put her headphones back in and went back into her mental preparation. I went back to arguing with Nathan and Luke for the rest of the bus ride, though I did notice that Sam got up and moved with a pissed off look on her face.
When we got to the field I handed Sam her bag and she took off to the bathroom to change her uniform, and didn’t return until Coach called everyone in.
“Do you ever shut up?” Sam demanded when Blake kept talking to her.
“Do you ever chill out?” he muttered.
“Not before a game,” Nathan said from beside me. He then squeezed into the space between Sam and Blake, preventing her from killing the idiot. Coach launched into his pre-game pep talk, and before I knew it, it was game time.
“Introducing tonight’s visiting team, the Westview Polar Bears!” the stadium was vibrating with energy as we followed Sam out onto the field. As per usual Sam received bullshit and ridicule for being a girl football player. The home team came next, followed by the national anthem.
“Captains!” The referee called. Sam, Nathan and I jogged out to mid field where the referee was standing. Three players from the opposing team were there as well.
When they refused to shake Sam’s hand she faked a bright smile, “Hello. I’m here too.”
The ref shot a look at them, “Shake hands.” They complied reluctantly.
“Don’t worry, I got my cooties shot,” she said. They shot her a strange look and Nathan and I fist bumped her.
“Kick or receive?” the ref asked us, since we won the toss.
“Kick-off,” Sam said smoothly.
The other team responded with enthusiasm. “That’s why a girl doesn’t call football plays.”
