"I can't do this, Kate."
She's staring down at the water. It's loud, so loud. It wasn't this loud at camp. Oh god, camp. What if the head counselor found them? They would both be sent home immediately. "It's way too high. You can't expect me to jump from here."
"That is exactly what I expect you to do." She looks up to the other girl. She already stripped down to her bathing suit and tossed her flashlight to the ground. "Just take my hand and jump. Or I can go first. It's really not that hard." But she's not getting it. It's too high up and it's too dark. Asher can't do heights and definitely can't do the dark. Why she thought she could do this in the first place was beyond her. Actually, she knew why. It was the same reason that she even came to be a camp counselor in the first place. Kate. Kate and her stupid big brown eyes and silky black hair. Kate and her caramel skin that was soft to touch. Kate and her smile that could make even a politician trust her. Kate and the unending love Asher had for her. "Come on. It'll be super quick and then we can run to the showers."
Asher hesitated as she looked back down. The cliff wasn't that high. Maybe only twenty or so feet if she was completely honest. It just looked so far. It was nearing midnight which meant total darkness which meant she could barely make our the pool of water below. If it weren't for it being the middle of the summer and still well above 70 degrees... Asher was sure even Kate's pouting and pleas wouldn't have gotten her out of her bed. But the water looked so far away.
"Alright, I'm going if you aren't." And with that, Kate started to walk back a ways. With the flashlight on the ground, Asher could only make out her feet as she ran. The next thing she knew, Kate breezed back her and it was quiet for only a minute. Then a loud splash followed by an echoing laugh. Ashe watched as Kate laughed and splashed below. She couldn't do this. Yes she could. No she couldn't. Asher didn't give herself much time to think before closing her eyes and running ahead like Kate had done. Only when her feet weren't touching the ground did she realize what she had done. As she was surrounded by freezing water, Asher realized she had jumped and all because of Kate.
"You are so lucky I love you." They were walking back to camp, dripping wet. Asher tried to ring out her hair and Kate only laughed. "I'm serious, Kate." Said girl just shrugged and pressed a light kiss to her cheek.
"I know. I am lucky."
