"The auditory nerve is a bundle of nerve fibers that carries hearing information between the cochlea the brain. Usually, hearing loss that is called "sensorineural" or "nerve deafness" is actually caused by problems with the cochlea, instead of the act......"

The Biology teacher droned on, teaching the lesson with the enthusiasm of a cold samoosa. Mandy studiously took notes down, even adding an illustration here and there. I looked down at my own blank page. Today, the workings of the auditory nerve did not interest me.

My thoughts were consumed by Samir A. Sinha.

I've never seen him at school before - and I would have noticed another desi in my year. Especially if said desi looked as if he came straight out of Bollywood.

Tousled black hair, soulful brown eyes and that nonchalant attitude...

Snap out of it!

What was this lovey-dovey attitude? Probably PMS. I shrugged and reluctantly began taking down notes from Mandy.

When the siren announced the arrival of the next period, I rushed out of class to deposit the 500 page burden - also known as my biology textbook - into my locker and get the accounting one instead.

On my locker door, I found a post it note.

"We need to talk Rai. Meet me at the fig tree during the break.

- Sinha"

Fig tree? During break? Who was he to make demands? I squashed the yellow note and tossed it in the garbage bin. Any more time contemplating this stranger's request and I'd be late for class.

He knew I needed my I.D. card back - we both did.

I raced off to acccounting, ready to be bombarded with the income statement and ledger accounts.

The lesson was uneventful and the plump teacher, Miss Smith, left the room half way through the lesson. I think she mumbled something about "underdone burgers"

I wouldn't blame her. Our school served the worst food.

I sighed and looked around. My eyes fell on Nick and Shweta, the school's wonder couple.

Nick and Tracy had been best friends since first grade. Everyone knew T liked Nick, well everyone except Nick. When Shweta enrolled at our school, Nick fell for her. Poor T was broken-hearted.

It was such a Kuch Kuch Hota Hai type of story. Although Nick and Shweta made a good couple, I'm sure Shweta had felt some remorse when Nick and T drifted away from each other.

T put on a brave face all the time and told us not to worry. She was content seeing Nick happy, even if it broke her heart.

You see, that's the thing with love. It has the power to destroy you. That's why I don't trust it.
