The bustle of the coffee shop didn't distract me. The now cold cup of coffee was shoved towards the wall as my notebook and colored pencils covered the small table. I sketched and still wasn't satisfied with what I drew on paper. The dress looked nothing like I had seen in my head. I leaned back against the booth and streched my back. I pulled my dirty blonde hair into a low bun before I began to clear the table of my hopeless drawings. I couldn't get it right. In my head I saw the most beautiful dress but when I transfered it to paper it didn't even look close.
"These are amazing" a woman said stopping by my booth. I looked up from my pile of sketches to see a woman probably 25, only a few years older than myself.
"They're just rough sketches" I told her smiling.
"If these are "rough" she said putting the air qoutes around rough "then I would love to see what they are meant to look like" she said shifting through the large pile of torn out, crumbled up papers.
"You would have to look into my mind to see that" I told her, both of us cracking a smile.
"Do you work for a label or is this just something you do in your free time?" the woman asked taking a seat across from me.
"I intern with Phillipa Lepley but I don't do any of the designing or anything. I just answer phones, get coffee and stuff like that" I told her. I have been interning with Phillipa for about 6 months and loved my job.
"Well I'm impressed. I'll have to make an appointment" she said smiling. Only know did I notice the ring on her finger.
"Congratulations" I told her "When are you getting married?" I asked
"We haven't set a date yet, we aren't trying to rush into things" she said before checking her watch. "Oh I must be going. It was lovely talking with you dear. I will be calling to make an appointment soon" she said before she rushed out the door, phone in one hand, coffee in the other.
"Oh thank god you're here" Philipa said half an hour later. "Someone" she said cutting her eyes towards the other intern who started just a few days ago "scheduled two appointments at once and I need you to take one" she said handing me a clip board. I graciously accepted the board. Even though it was never said aloud, being trusted with an appointment was a huge sign of trust. The intern who left a few weeks after I started said that running an appointment could be the best or the worst thing ever. As long as it is handled correctly. Once at my desk I went over what the bride was looking for. At 9 sharp our appointments walked in. I took my bride, Caroline to the back room, the one we never really used. I started talking to her about her fiance, and her wedding (like you see on Say Yes to the Dress) before leaving to get a few dresses. I had observed and helped so many times I knew what to look for in a bride to find the perfect dress. I really couldn't afford to screw this up.
Nine dresses later and there still wasn't a perfect fit. I scribbled down what she liked and what she didn't on my notepad and started walking through racks of dresses, finally pulling the perfect one.
"O my god I love it" Caroline said turning in the mirror. We walked out to show her mom and sister who came along. The simple, but elegant gown had the two speechless. Always a good sign.
"Wow I was just coming to see how it was going but I don't think you need any help" Phillipa said rounding the corner.
"It's perfect" Caroline said staring at her self in the mirror. "I'll take it" she said smiling before her mom and sister hugged.
The rest of the day was perfect. Phillipa allowed me to handle 2 extra appointments that went even better than the first. During our lunch break I spread out on the floor of my cublical still trying to transfer the image of the dress onto paper.
