It was finally March, and that meant no more cold walks to the library. Today, I was on the hunt for a book for my newest English assignment. I walked through the sidewalk and into the library doors. "Hi, Mrs. Greer." I smiled.
"Hello, Emma." She looked up from her book and through her red framed glasses. I was quickly hit with the smell of freshly sprayed coconut air freshener. I walked through the all too familiar room and straight towards the biography section. My eyes wandered around the different biographies- from Rosa Parks to Patsy Cline and all the way to Neil Armstrong. One particular book caught my eye- Ronnie Milsap. I grabbed the spine of the book, expecting it to smoothly slide off the shelf, but just the opposite happened. I kept pulling and pulling but it wouldn't come off. My hands released from the book, and just as they did, the book slid to the other side. My eyes were met with another pair on the other side.
"I'm sorry," A voice mumbled. "You can have it." He said again, pushing the book closer to me.
"It's okay," I smiled. "We can share." I stuck my hand through the opened space where the book once was. "Emma."
"Hunter." He smiled and looked at the ground. I walked around to where Hunter was. His hair was blonde and through his glasses, his eyes looked blue. I tucked my hair behind my ear and searched for a place to sit. "We can sit over there." He said shyly, pointing to an open table with two seats. I nodded my head and we walked towards the table. We both took a seat and I laid the book on the table.
"So, what grade are you in?"
"7th." His voice was quiet and I could tell he was shy.
"Me too!" He finally made eye contact and smiled. "So you like Ronnie Milsap?"
"Oh, yeah."
"He's pretty cool. What's your favorite song?"
"Stranger In My House."
"No way! That's mine to." He smiled at me satisfyingly and I noticed he seemed more comfortable.
We flipped through the thousands of pages from the book; laughing at the funny pictures and acting out what it would be like to be blind.
"Shoot! I'm gonna be late getting back home. It was great meeting you Hunter. Hopefully I'll see you around." I smiled at him.
"You too." His voice fell quiet and his shyness was clear again. I waved at him as I walked through the glass door.
