Austen's POV
I was excited and anxious for school to end. I came to Earth a year ago and this is my first encounter with another gem. Finally meeting with another gem was making me very excited. It's as though I'm finally feeling alive for the first time since I've came to Earth! I'm supposed to meet her after class in the forest behind our school. What I can't believe is that she's been in the same class as me this whole time without me even noticing!
Finally, the bell for the final class rang. I rushed to my locker to get my coat and gloves, and ran towards the forest. Even though I ran as fast as I could, Ruby was already there when I arrived. She was gazing off into the distance deep in thought. As I got closer, I noticed another girl was with her. She noticed me first and starting waving her hands excitedly. Ruby whispered something to the girl and she stopped waving. They stood there and waited until I reached where they were standing. Ruby's face, showing no hint of emotion, gives her an eerie aura. It was so different from the Ruby that usually smiles at everyone who talks to her.
"You sure got here quickly," I said. "Uh.. who's this?" I asked, gesturing to the girl standing next to her.
"Hey cutie! Austen was it? Well it's nice to meet you! I'm Mia," the girl said with a giggle as she grabbed my hand and shook it.
Stunned, I stood frozen for a few seconds before regaining my cool and responded, "Hey it's nice to meet you too Mia." I glanced at Ruby seeing if she was going to tell her friend to leave so we could talk about our little alliance but to my dismay, she was staring off into the distance, not paying even a bit of attention to their conversation. I tried to pull my hand free from Mia's grasp as I said, "So um, I was kinda hoping to talk to Ruby alone if you don't-"
"Oh to talk about the alliance right?" she interrupted. My eyes widened, how did she- "Guess I forgot to mention this earlier but I'm also a gem. I'm the garnet!" she interrupted again with a light hearted laugh. "Ruby told me you're the emerald. Right?"
"Yeah-" I started before I was yet again interrupted, but this time by Ruby.
"Now if you guys are done flirting with each other, can we please get to the point?" she sighed in exasperation.
"Okaaaay, let's talk about us two, errr three joining forces. I think it'll be easier to find the others if we stick together, and it'll also be harder for the hunters to kill us as well."
"I agree with what you said," Ruby said slowly. "But first, we should exchange all the information we have about the other gems. And we should move to a more private location." I looked around at all the students from our school that were taking the forest trail to get home.
"Good idea. We can use my house," I offered. "My parents have to drive my brother to soccer practise today so they'll be home late." Only after saying that did I realize how weird that probably sounded. What kind of girls would accept to go to the house of a guy they barely knew? Especially when their parents were away? Although Mia would probably would be more than willing.
"Sure," Ruby said to my surprise. I stared at her in disbelief. She wasn't scared I would do something weird to her? She stared right back into my eyes.
