Flashback 1918.

During the year of 1918 then the Spanish Influenza struck the world, including New Orleans, and it struck hard.

Elijah Mikaelson and the rest of his family had just gotten to town, unaware that they would arrive just at the time when the flu reached it's worst. Not that it mattered much to the originals anyways, being vampires they were immune to the disease. Of course, volunteers were needed at the hospital and Elijah -, being the noble one in his family, -volunteered to help out. Due to his lack of medicinal knowledge, he helped as best as he could by keeping track of the paper work. With so many deaths then it was rather hard to keep track of whom died and who survived, but Elijah did his very best of course.

There was one interesting thing that occurred to him though while going through all the papers; out of all the nurses and doctors there was only one that had not yet experienced any of her patients dying horribly; a young nurse with the name Genevieve.

Somehow, the young woman had managed to keep most of her patients alive and the ones that had been too sick to be saved had died in their sleep, painlessly.

Elijah had yet to learn that this was only because the redhead was a skilled witch that could use both spells and herbal potions to help treat the dying. Unfortunately though Genevieve was forced to keep her talents hidden so no one would find out about her supernatural abilities, but she seemed to have forgotten that Elijah Mikaelson, original vampire, now controlled the hospital.

Elijah and his family had been moving around for centuries, starting only shortly after their mother, Esther, had turned them all into vampires. They were still moving to this day, although they had found plenty of places where they could settle and move in on a more permanent basis, their father Mikael, was hunting them down, determined to kill the monstrosity that was Niklaus, although if his other children got in the way, he would not hesitate to kill them.

New Orleans was there next stop, but unbeknownst to them, the Spanish Influenza had set in. Elijah being Elijah decided to help out, and volunteered at the hospital. Although he was no good with medicine and the such, he helped keep a record of who had died and when, and was more than capable of disposing of the bodies when people had died, after all, he couldn't catch the disease himself.

What stroke him as strange was the fact that one nurse there, Genevieve, seemed to have more compliant patients, that never seemed to suffer. Now Elijah knew it wasn't that she was lucky, there was no such thing in the current predicament, so he studied her closely until one day deciding to confront her about it. Of course, they had spoken on a couple of brief occasions when Elijah was collecting information, but never maintained a proper conversation.

One late afternoon, Elijah was going home to rest before returning later, when he noticed Genevieve leaving at the same time, so being a gentleman, and wanting to know more about her and her patients, he decided to walk her home.

"Genevieve." He called out to her as she left the hospital just before him, and caught up to her with ease, "May I accompany you home?"

The redhead turned around as she heard Elijah call her name and she smiled softly at the original vampire, trying to hide her anxiety.

"Elijah Mikaelson," she said as he caught up with her, "to what do I owe the pleasure?" she wondered.

After all then the Mikaelsons were of the upper class and to keep things simple then Genevieve wasn't. Of course the young witch was well aware that Elijah was an original, any witch could sense the powerful creatures, even from a distance.
