Chapter 1
A soft mist covered the neighborhood. "What a good way to start out my summer" I mumbled. That day was the first day of summer vacation. I had finally escaped the hellhole that society deemed St. George Junior High. After 10 long painful years spent with negative, depressing, and overall dull people, I was finally out. St. I was transferring to a new school. A much more exciting school from what ive heard. Junior year was gonna be quite promising. St. George is a lonely school out by a cemetery and surrounded by cornfields in the middle of no where. Anyway, now I was out.
"Connor! I'm leaving! I'm going to work! There's lasagna in the fridge." I looked at my phone, 8:45. I Groaned as i got out of bed. I liked to get up early and go running, I just wasn't feeling it today though. I went downstairs to find my brother Anjel serving himself cereal. "Want some?" he asked me. "Nah, I'm not very hungry" I responded while I reached for an apple. " Can you take me to Eli and Jane's house later?"
Eli and Jane were my cousins. They lived 20 minutes away, I really enjoyed going to their house because 1) They lived in a more urban part of town and we would always go to gas stations, and 2) Claire lived across the street. Claire was basically my dream girl. We both listened to incredibly mainstream music, we loved YouTube, and were pretty much sarcastic about everything.
That day my heart stopped. I hadn't seen her in a while. That led me to forget the beautiful way her eyes lit up when she laughed or the way her smile could light up a room. Claire was going into 10 grade (therefore being a year younger) and had recently won the vote for student council president. I guess you could say she was pretty popular. Back in St George I wasn't anywhere near popular. The thing is my cousin Adam goes to BB with Claire and he is pretty popular so yeah you can connect the dots.
" I'll be ready in five" muttered Anjel drowsily. I went upstairs into my room and got changed. I just reached into my closet and took the first thing i grabbed. "Oh the irony," I chuckled as I pulled out a St George Raiders T-shirt that I had cut the sleeves off, cargo shorts and my favorite pair of black Vans. My IPhone started ringing, it was my brother. He said he was in the car already so i headed out. Little did I know that this was the beginning of the longest, reckless, and memorable day I would have in a long time. The car ride was silent, the air was still and it was chilly.
Bourbonnais was a quite town nothing much ever happens. Most of the neighbors know each others busyness inside and out, and I hate it. My neighborhood is wretched. I hate everything about it. The neighbors children are even worse. They re a bunch of stuck up snobs who spend there time either playing basketball or driving around in their expensive cars.
A huge grin spread across my face as we pulled up to the bright yellow, two story, apartment.
