Chapter 10
Jamie skipped in the tall field of golden grass. “Come on Ro.”
I pushed the blades of grass aside as I made my way toward her. I then picked her up and swung her around leaving her in a thunder of laughter. She wiggled in my grasp. “Down.”
I held her tighter and chuckled to myself. “Nope.”
She tried to wiggle out with contagious giggles. “Down.”
I smiled at her small vocabulary and put her down. She was like a wind-up toy as soon as I settled her down she ran. I watched as Jamie disappeard into the grass. I crossed my arms and kept my eye on her.
The grass parted as she sprinted back. Her eyes danced and she smiled. “Light bug.” She opened her cupped hands to reveal a small firefly.
The light of the bug blinked and suddenly the light consumed me.
The light became the headlights of a car as it sped past me. I opened my eyes to find myself in the backseat of a car with Jamie. Jamie sat next to me with one hand cupping her chin. Mom drove the car. Rain pounded the windows and I could hardly see any cars or any scenery with the rain and speed. “Mom, slow down.”
She ignored or didn’t hear me. She pulled a can of beer to her lips.
“Mom, slow down. Jamie is in the car.”
Again, she didn’t respond and I had a feeling I didn’t exist. The thunder seemed to pick up in the intense moments as mom swerved the car to the right. A truck sped toward us, with a series of honks. Mom crushed her can of beer but other then that she didn't move.
Jamie jumped from her bored trance and sat up. “Mommy?”
Mom didn’t respond.
Jamie shook mom’s seat. “Mommy!”
“Shut the fuck up!” mom shouted.
I tried to stand up and reach for the steering wheel but my seat belt held me in place. I repeatedly tried to unbuckle myself but it only kept me in place.
“Jamie get out of the car!” I shouted. Jamie didn’t respond.
“Mommy! I’m scared.” Jamie shouted.
I heard the honks of the truck coming closer. A pain like a million searing knives spread throughout my body and I felt like I could never breathe again.
“Rowan?”
I felt the light creep to my eyes . “Jamie?”
I saw the face of one of my foster sisters and I realized that Jamie is dead. She felt my forehead with concern in her eyes. “Are you okay?”
I felt conflicted with pain and anger but anger won over. “Get out!”
I saw her eyes water as she ran out. I slipped out of bed with beads of sweat trickling my back.
I quickly took a shower then put on another band tee and dark blue jeans. After breakfast, I jogged up to my room and grabbed my book bag. I turned before leaving and quickly stuffed Brody’s letter in my back pocket.
I didn’t know why I brought it. I guess it was something I couldn’t part with.
I then ran out the door to find it raining. I immediately thought about my dream and muttered a curse. I grabbed a hoodie and pulled the hood up.
After making a couple turns, I parked the car and ran for my locker.
A familiar face stood and smiled by my locker. “Hey grumpy. We need to talk.”
