A little girl is crying in the middle of a backyard.
One knee a pale cream, unblemished.
The other red and raw from a fight with the pavement.
Her mother is trying to calm her down, bringing bribes of toys and a second slice of birthday cake.
But as long it hurts she will cry.
"Phoebe, sweetie, there there. I promise you'll feel better soon"
A little boy not much older notices her wails. He too has felt the bite of the pavement before.
He runs as fast as he can, digging his small shoe into a small crack to send him flying into the ground as the girl had minutes before.
Both mother and daughter freeze as he hits it hard. The little girl's sobs stop for a moment as he sits up with tears in his large bright eyes.
"Owww...it hurts!" He points at his matching scratched knee before a group of mothers begin to scold him.
"Don't hurt yourself to cheer her up, she's just being silly"
He ignores their worries, crawling to her side. She sucks in a shaky breath, staring intently at his knee.
"But it hurts less cos I'm hurt too right?" He mumbles almost too intelligently for his age.
Her eyes are wide as she nods slowly.
The girl's mother pulls them apart with a sigh. "Don't teach her that, it's silly"
But that day the girl's knee stung just a little less.
Maybe the boy was right.
Having someone else feel your pain made it a little more bearable.

Hey guys!! Thanks for giving this story a chance! This is just a tiny prologue, written in quite a different style to the rest of the story. Both the following chapters are much much larger as I'm so excited to flesh out this story. Check them out and I'll be updating very soon!
