Augustus's POV:

I remember it like it was yesterday. The day that I got the call from Hazel's mother. It was one of the worst calls I ever got, when she told me Hazel had died because she couldn't fight the cancer. She was so strong up until that day and then she just couldn't take it. Hazel Grace Lancaster was my everything. We shared thoughts and books and went to Amsterdam together to meet our favorite author. I kept her happy when she felt she had no reason to live. And, in turn, she did the same for me. I loved her and we gave each other an infinity within a numbered amount of days. She made a mark on this world, though it may be small to everyone else, but It was a great one to me. She won't be forgotten, as long as I am here. And that right there was my eulogy for her funeral. Since that day I have not really been okay, but I am getting through it.

--------------------------

Here I lay in my bed. Out of grief I haven't eaten much, just slept, and read Hazel's favorite book, An Imperial Affliction. My best friend, Isaac, hasn't even been coming around to see me anymore. I am a depressed mess, and my mom is starting to seriously worry about me.

"Honey? Gus! Can you come to the top of the steps please?" My mother calls.

What could she be up to now? Lately she has been trying so hard to get me up out of bed by making me meals that I hardly ever eat, arranging for friends to come over, that hardly ever stay 20 minutes, and making me go to support group that I just sit silently in. You see, I have cancer to. I have Osteosarcoma, and I lost my leg a few years ago because of it, but as far as being sick goes, I'm doing alright.

I open my bedroom door to see her standing there waiting for me.

"Gus please, get out of bed for a little bit. I know it hurts, but you are going to have to start moving on sometime," she says gesturing to my old t-shirt and shorts that I haven't changed out of for two days,"Now, get dressed, I have someone at the door I would like you to meet."

"Alright mother, I'm coming." I say giving her a kiss on the cheek.

I change into a pair of black basketball shorts and a red t-shirt and put a pair of black Nikes with white laces on. I comb out my hair and brush my teeth.

I run down the stairs to see my mother standing with a girl at the front door.

"Oh good Gus you're here. I want you to meet Jess. Jess just moved in next door and I wanted to make her feel welcome."

Little did I know, this girl standing right in front of me would change my life forever.
