Maya's POV

I was running through the woods, sprinting ahead of my parents as we were out for the hunt. My parents were yelling from behind me, telling me to slow down, but I didn't. I couldn't. I was too pumped up on the adrenaline. I loved the feeling of the wind rushing through my fur and the soft mud on my paws. The smell of the forest was so fresh it awakened my senses, making my eyes widen in alertness as I picked up its scent. I smelled my prey.

I sped up as much as I could, weaving in and out of trees until I had the rabbit in my sights. I couldn't hear my parents anymore but I wasn't going to let this catch get away.

With each leap I closed in on the rabbit, and when the distance was small enough I pounced and landed on it, holding it down with my two front paws. I bit into its neck without a second thought and stopped its squirming, then licked the blood from around my mouth. My first kill tasted good.

"Maya!" My ears twitched when I picked up on my dad's voice and his and mum's footsteps rushing up behind me. I picked up the rabbit and turned to face them, and when I dropped it in front of them I smiled proudly however that quickly disappeared when I saw dad's annoyance. "What have I told you about running off?"

"But, dad-"

"Honey..." Mum nudged dad aside and spoke quietly to him. "It's her first time hunting - properly - and she's excited. Surely you understand that?" Dad looked unconvinced. "You remember how you were on your first hunt, don't you?" He looked nostalgic, even slightly happy as he thought back, but when he realised we were both watching him he snapped out of it.

"I'm just worried about her. She's still just a pup and if she goes wandering off who knows what'll happen to her."

Mum sighed. I knew she agreed with him but she wanted to give me my freedom and for that I was thankful. "I understand you're worried, sweetheart, I am too! She may still be a pup to us but she is growing up and we need to respect that. We can't always be there for her."

I decided to interject. "Dad, I'll be fine. I've been okay so far, right?" My parents exchanged glances. "I promise you that I'll stay safe and won't get into any trouble, just please, let me keep hunting!"

"Alright, Maya. I..." Dad glanced at mum again. "I trust you."

My face lit up and I jumped to wrap my front legs around his neck to lick his face. "Thank you, dad."

He laughed and licked me back, then nudged me off just as mum picked up the rabbit. "Come on. Let's go home." We started walking back to the cabin with me in-between the two of them. "I'm going to cook this rabbit up, we'll have a nice family dinner and then you need to have an early night ready for school tomorrow."

"But mum, can't I stay out for a little longer?"

"You may be a wolf but you're also a human, and humans need their sleep." She grinned and nudged me with her head. "Especially tired humans who get grumpy when they're woken up."

"Hey! I don't get grumpy..." I frowned, then smirked as I thought of a way I could prove them wrong and win a little something. "...last one back to the house is a big fur ball!"

I jumped and ran at full speed back to the cabin, however just before I got too far away I heard dad say, "She's still a pup at heart."
