After two more hours, we're in Arizona. Scott pulls into a diner and says "Up and out, time to eat!" I get up and run into the old school diner and stop as I reach the door and breathe in the sweet milkshakes, salty fries, crispy chicken, and hamburgers. Scott comes in and guides me to a red booth, where we sit.
An older woman with black hair and a yellow and red uniform comes up and asks "Hello, loves! What can I get you two today?"
Scott says "I'll have chicken strips with a side of fries." He looks at me, "I'll pay, get whatever you want. But we're spitting a milkshake."
I nod and turn my attention to the lady. "I'd like the cheeseburger, fries, and a large, chocolate milkshake."
She nods and says "With whipped cream and two cherries?"
Scott feigns a look of bewilderment and says "Do you even have to ask?"
The waitress laughs, "He's a keeper. It'll be right out."
I uncomfortably laugh as she walks away. Scott looks at me, disregarding the waitresses comment. "So, it'll take about eleven hours to get to San Francisco." I nod. He continues "I think we should stay here tonight, drive five and a half hours tomorrow, then get there the next day. That'll be the last day we stay in a hotel. We need gas while we're here, then some tomorrow, and maybe two the next day."
"Where will we go?" I ask.
"Well, I'm thinking about that. I'll drive us to a hotel tonight. Then we can meet by the pool and talk. Bring your laptop to the pool. And a bathing suit."
I nod and see our food coming toward us.
She sits down the chicken strips in front of Scott, a huge pile of fries in the middle, and my hamburger. She grabs two straws and puts them in the milkshake. I take a gulp and almost die. It's so good. Scott thinks the same, because he gets up and hugs our waitress. She's taken aback, but then laughs and pats his back. Scott sits down and dips his fries into the whipped cream as the waitress sits down the bill. "Fifteen dollars. A tip of ten. 25 total." He does the math aloud.
He throws down the money and gets back to eating and talking about his school and how good the food is. I always laugh because he's so funny. We get done and leave.
He starts driving to the next hotel, it's four star. We finally arrive and dash in. "Hello ma'am. Two rooms. Side by side, please, or at least close." She nods and finds two rooms side by side. She gives us our keys and we go to the elevator, waiting for our floor.
"I've known you for a day."
He laughs. "Seems like forever and a half." Scott gets off the elevator and unlocks his door, propping it open with his foot. He's carrying his duffle bag and such. I look at him. He says "Meet me by the pool in twenty minutes or so." I nod and wave, as I walk in my room.---------------------------
